Kenya Airways has announced a new codeshare agreement with Qatar Airways, opening up access to 19 destinations across Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. The strategic partnership, which takes effect on October 26, 2025, represents a significant expansion of both airlines’ networks and promises enhanced travel convenience for passengers.
According to a statement posted by Kenya Airways (KQ) on X, the collaboration aims to streamline travel through Nairobi and Doha, providing passengers with more flexibility and smoother connections. Under the agreement, KQ customers will gain access to 11 global destinations via Doha, while Qatar Airways passengers will be able to reach 8 African cities through Nairobi. This expansion will be further supported by Qatar Airways’ new third daily flight between Doha and Nairobi.
A Boost for Regional Connectivity
The partnership is expected to reduce travel time and costs for passengers flying between Africa and Asia by eliminating the need for multiple bookings. Travellers will also enjoy simplified baggage transfers and synchronized flight schedules, ensuring minimal layovers and greater efficiency.
Public response to the announcement has been overwhelmingly positive. Many Kenyans celebrated the move as a “fantastic development”, praising the partnership for improving connectivity between the continents. Others described it as “momentous,” highlighting the growing optimism among frequent travelers and business communities eager for seamless travel options.
National Pride and Emotional Significance
Some Kenyans linked the announcement to national pride, referencing Kenya Airways’ role in facilitating the repatriation of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s body earlier this month. One user on X expressed gratitude, writing, “After the heshima you gave us during Raila’s period, I wish you nothing but the best.”

These sentiments reflect how KQ’s image as Kenya’s flag carrier continues to inspire emotional attachment and public goodwill, especially following its acts of national service during solemn moments.
Expanding Strategic Partnerships
The new deal forms part of Kenya Airways’ broader strategy to extend its global footprint through alliances rather than launching new direct routes. The airline already maintains partnerships with leading carriers such as Air France, Precision Air, Saudi Arabia Airlines, British Airways, JamboJet, Egypt Air, South Africa Airways, and Royal Air Maroc.
As noted on KQ’s website: “To offer our guests a wider choice of destinations, Kenya Airways has partnered with various airlines. You will still have a Kenya Airways flight number; however, for a segment of the journey, you will fly one of our partners.”
For Qatar Airways, this partnership solidifies its reputation as a key gateway between Africa and the rest of the world, adding to its network of over 170 destinations.

Economic and Tourism Impact
Analysts believe the codeshare agreement will foster tourism, trade, and investment between Africa, the Middle East, and Asia by simplifying access to major business and leisure hubs. The move also enhances Nairobi’s position as a regional aviation hub, complementing Kenya’s vision to become the leading air transport center in East and Central Africa.
With operations commencing next week, travelers can look forward to greater route flexibility and the convenience of single-ticket journeys, making intercontinental travel
