Airtel Kenya has launched free access to the Kenya Education Cloud and Elimika platforms, enabling thousands of teachers and students to use educational resources without paying for data. The announcement, made on World Teachers’ Day, aligns with Airtel Africa’s $57 million partnership with UNICEF to expand digital learning under the “Accessible Learning Content” initiative.
Implemented in collaboration with the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) and the Ministry of Education, this initiative allows users to browse the Kenya Education Cloud and the Elimika teacher training platform without incurring data costs. The goal is to remove connectivity barriers that prevent many learners and educators from accessing essential digital materials.
Bridging Digital Gaps in Education
Digital inequality remains a major challenge in Kenya, where only 10.7% of households own computers and 23.8% have reliable internet connections. Fewer than half of all secondary schools operate computer labs, and even fewer have internet connectivity. Airtel Kenya’s zero-rated access initiative aims to bridge this gap, ensuring that students in rural and underserved areas can enjoy the same opportunities as those in urban centers.
The Kenya Education Cloud hosts rich digital content aligned with the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), including video lessons, interactive modules, and recorded sessions for learners from pre-primary to Grade 9. On the other hand, the Elimika platform focuses on teacher development, providing access to updated teaching techniques and professional training materials—at no cost.
Empowering Schools Through Connectivity
Through its UNICEF partnership, Airtel Africa supports 141 public primary schools in Kenya, each receiving 300 GB of monthly data. This data allocation helps schools integrate technology into everyday learning using government-issued tablets, reinforcing Kenya’s push for digital literacy and inclusive education.
By eliminating data charges, Airtel is not only empowering teachers and learners but also promoting sustainable digital education. The initiative is expected to improve teaching outcomes, digital skills, and equal access to learning resources, contributing to Kenya’s long-term education goals.
