Fuliza M-PESA is a popular overdraft service offered by Safaricom, allowing users to complete M-PESA transactions even when they don’t have enough funds in their wallet. While convenient, there are times when a customer may wish to deactivate Fuliza, especially to manage personal finances more independently or avoid recurring daily charges.

If you’re wondering how to opt out of Fuliza, here’s a clear and updated guide using both USSD code and the M-PESA app.

What is Fuliza and Why Might You Want to Opt Out?

Fuliza allows you to:

  • Buy goods and services via Lipa na M-PESA
  • Pay bills
  • Send money to other M-PESA users

However, Fuliza:

  • Applies daily maintenance fees until the overdraft is cleared
  • Is automatically repaid from your incoming M-PESA funds
  • May lead to over-reliance on debt for regular transactions

How to Opt Into Fuliza (For Reference)

If you’re not yet registered and want to activate Fuliza:

  • Dial *234#
  • Select “Fuliza M-PESA” and follow the prompts

How to Opt Out of Fuliza M-PESA (USSD Method)

  1. Dial *234# from your Safaricom line
  2. Select “Fuliza M-PESA” (usually option 0)
  3. Choose “Opt-Out” (option 7)
  4. Confirm your request to deactivate Fuliza

You’ll receive a text message confirming that you have successfully opted out of the service.

Important Note: If you decide to rejoin Fuliza later, your credit limit may change based on your transaction history and repayment behavior.

How to Opt Out Using the M-PESA App (Simpler Method)

  1. Open the M-PESA app on your smartphone
  2. Tap on the Transact section
  3. Scroll down and select “Fuliza”
  4. Once on the Fuliza dashboard, tap the three-dot menu (top right corner)
  5. Select “Opt Out” and confirm your decision

This method is typically faster and more intuitive compared to the USSD option.

Additional Tips:

  • Before opting out, ensure your Fuliza balance is cleared to avoid any deductions.
  • If you experience financial strain from recurring Fuliza charges, consider switching to alternatives like M-Shwari, KCB M-PESA, or Tala, which may offer better repayment flexibility.
  • You can always opt back in if your circumstances change.
