Currently, Starlink operates around 9,500 satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO), with approximately 6,000 of those being the GEN2 variants. These satellites provide global coverage for services like 4G mobile roaming and basic mobile connectivity for unmodified smartphones. As of 2025, Starlink’s network boasted 9 million global customers, with 110,000 of those in the UK. This growing customer base includes many rural areas where terrestrial mobile signals are often unreliable or non-existent. The introduction of the GEN2 satellites will further bolster the network’s ability to offer reliable mobile broadband, helping SpaceX stay ahead in the rapidly expanding satellite communications sector.

What Makes GEN2 Satellites Different?

While Starlink’s current offering provides basic mobile connectivity for text messages, calls, and some data tasks in remote locations, the GEN2 satellites are set to take the service to the next level. The new satellites are expected to deliver 5G-like speeds, improving on the existing service’s capacity and throughput by a massive margin—more than 100 times the capacity and over 20 times the throughput of the first-generation constellation. This means significantly faster and more reliable mobile data services, with the potential for near-5G experience even in the most remote regions.

Moreover, the second-generation satellites are expected to build on the existing partnerships, like the one SpaceX has with T-Mobile in the U.S. This partnership, launched in 2025, already provides coverage to over 400 million people across 22 countries, allowing basic 4G-style connectivity to millions of users. With the upcoming launch of the GEN2 satellites, this capability is expected to expand dramatically, ushering in an era of satellite-powered mobile broadband.

Price and Availability

While SpaceX has not provided specific pricing details for the second-generation service, the current Starlink offerings are priced at £55 per month for the ‘Residential Lite’ plan, which includes unlimited data at download speeds of up to 200Mbps. For users who opt for roaming data, there are various plans available, such as a £50 per month package that provides 50GB of data. The GEN2 satellite service will likely follow a similar pricing structure but with enhanced features such as faster speeds and improved service coverage.

The Future of Satellite Mobile Services

One of the most intriguing aspects of SpaceX’s plans for the second-generation satellites is the potential for them to operate as a standalone mobile service. Elon Musk has hinted at the possibility of SpaceX launching its own mobile service for consumers, which could put the company in direct competition with existing mobile operators. This move would disrupt the traditional telecommunications industry, as SpaceX could leverage its existing satellite infrastructure to offer mobile services that bypass conventional mobile networks.

If this vision comes to fruition, SpaceX would join a growing number of companies offering satellite-based mobile connectivity, including major players like Amazon’s Project Kuiper and OneWeb. However, what sets SpaceX apart is its existing network of over 6,000 satellites and its long history of launching and maintaining space-based communications systems, which gives it a distinct advantage over competitors still in the planning stages.

As we approach the 2027 launch window, the excitement surrounding SpaceX’s second-generation Direct-to-Cell satellites is building. The combination of advanced satellite technology, AI-powered fraud prevention, and the growing demand for reliable mobile services in remote areas creates an ideal environment for SpaceX to expand its influence in the telecommunications industry.
