Safaricom’s Data Save service, also known as Data Manager, lets PrePay and PostPay subscribers manage data speeds to extend browsing time even after bundles are exhausted. By activating this service, your download speeds are reduced, but basic app functionality remains unaffected. You also continue to receive low-bundle alerts when balance drops below 2MB. This guide explains how to enable ordisable Data Save and offers insights into optimizing your data usage.

What Is Data Save (Data Manager)?

Data Manager is a free, opt-in service provided by Safaricom to prevent airtime depletion when your data bundle expires. It throttles your connection to conserve data usage without disrupting essential applications. Users can activate or deactivate the service anytime. When disabled, standard browsing rates apply per MB. Data Manager helps avoid unexpected charges and gives users more predictable control over their internet use for both PrePay and PostPay lines

How to Activate Data Save via USSD

The most straightforward method uses the USSD code *544#:

  1. Dial *544#.
  2. Select Balance & Tips.
  3. Choose Data Save (or My Data Manager).
  4. Select Activate Data Save (option to save bundles by reducing speed).
  5. You’ll receive a confirmation SMS indicating the service is active.

Once active, browsing continues at lower speeds, preserving airtime even after your data bundle runs out

Additional Ways to Enable Data Save

Via *100# or *456# USSD

Options depending on your line or menu setup:

  • Dial *100#, navigate to My Account → Airtime and Data Manager → Activate.
  • Alternatively, use *456#, go to Activate → Data Manager → Don’t browse without a data bundle, then select Activate

Via the MySafaricom App

Open the app, go to Data, then Data Usage or Data Manager, and toggle the service on or off. This version offers visual menus and settings management online

How to Deactivate Data Save

To resume normal browsing speeds and allow airtime browsing when bundles are depleted:

  • Dial *544#, go through Balance & Tips → Data Save → Full Speeds.
  • Choose the option to deactivate Data Save.
  • You will receive a confirmation SMS and can opt to manage it via Safaricom’s Self‑Care portal.

After deactivation, browsing is charged at out-of-bundle rates (about KSh 4.3 per MB) until you purchase a bundle

Why Use Data Manager?

  • Prevents your airtime from being consumed when your data bundle runs out.
  • Eliminates surprise charges for out-of-bundle browsing.
  • Enables controlled data usage—ideal if airtime is limited.
  • Lets you opt in or out any time—user-friendly and flexible

Expert Tips for Managing Your Data

  • Monitor your data usage through the Safaricom app or portal to identify high-consuming apps.
  • Avoid automatic app updates or background syncing unless on Wi-Fi.
  • Stream in lower resolution or download content while on Wi-Fi to conserve mobile data.

Support Contacts

  • PrePay: Dial 100 or call 0722 002 100
  • PostPay: Dial 200 or call 0722 002 200
