If you are looking to get your Driver’s License in Gambia, you need to follow a straightforward procedure. Whether you are applying for the first time or renewing your license, this guide will help you understand the process, eligibility, required documents, fees, and more.

Procedure to Obtain a Driver’s License

  1. Apply for a Provisional (Learner’s) License
    If you are applying for a driver’s license for the first time, you must complete and submit an application for a provisional (learner’s) license. This license is valid for a minimum period of 3 months.
  2. Submit Your Application and Pay the Fee
    Submit your application for the learner’s license, along with all required documents. The fee for the provisional license is D100.
  3. Practice and Pass the Driving Exam
    During the 3-month period, practice your driving skills. Once you feel ready, take the driving exams. Upon passing, you will receive a Certificate of Competence that includes the vehicle group for which you are qualified.Vehicle Grouping:
    • Group A: Private motor car
    • Group B: Motorcycle
    • Group C: Commercial vehicle
    • Group D: Motor vehicle of special type
  4. Obtain Your Full Driver’s License
    After passing your driving exam, you can apply for your Driver’s License for D500.

Required Documents

For Gambian Citizens:

  • National ID Card
  • Provisional License plus Certificate of Competence

For Non-Gambian Citizens:

  • Residential Permit A/B plus Foreign Driving License
  • Provisional License plus Certificate of Competence

Eligibility

  • Age Requirement: Applicants must be 18 years or older.
  • Foreign Driver’s License: Holders of a foreign driver’s license may drive in Gambia for up to 90 days. After this period, they must acquire a Gambian driver’s license.
  • Residential Permit Holders: Residential permit holders are not allowed to obtain a commercial driver’s license unless approved by the Inspector General of Police.

Fees

  • Provisional (Learner’s) License: D100
  • Driver’s License: D500

Validity

  • The Provisional (Learner’s) License is valid for a minimum of 3 months.
  • The Driver’s License is valid for a specified period, which should be confirmed with the relevant authorities.

Processing Time

The processing time for obtaining the Driver’s License or Provisional License varies depending on the application process and any necessary exams. Typically, the process may take a few days to a couple of weeks.

Other Uses of the Driver’s License

Apart from allowing you to drive legally in Gambia, the Driver’s License serves as proof of your competence in operating a motor vehicle. It may also be required for identification purposes in various situations.
