NASA has announced that it is suspending the Crew-11 mission, with astronauts set to return home in the coming days. The decision comes after a medical concern arose involving one of the crew members aboard the International Space Station (ISS). While NASA confirmed the situation is stable, the agency decided to cut the mission short as a precautionary measure.
NASA’s Statement on Crew-11 Mission
Jared Isaacman, NASA Administrator, shared in a statement:
“For over 60 years, NASA has set the standard for safety and security in crewed space flight. After discussions with Chief Health and Medical Officer J.D. Polk and leadership across the agency, I’ve come to the decision that it is in the best interest of our astronauts to return Crew-11 ahead of their planned departure.”
The astronauts have been on the ISS since August 2025, and the agency was planning for their return later this year. However, the recent medical issue has led to the decision to expedite their return.
The Medical Concern Aboard the ISS
NASA has not disclosed the exact details of the medical concern, citing privacy for the affected crew member. The agency did confirm that the individual is stable and that their health is being closely monitored. The situation arose on Wednesday afternoon, prompting NASA to evaluate all options, including ending the mission earlier than initially planned.
Spacewalk Postponed
As a result of the medical situation, NASA also announced that a spacewalk scheduled for Thursday, January 8, would be postponed. The agency stated that such situations are part of the training NASA and its partners undergo to ensure the safety of crew members during space missions.
The agency has promised to provide further updates within the next 24 hours as the situation develops.
