Overview

Founded in 1970 as Customs & Excise Workers (CUEW) Sacco by employees of the Customs and Excise Department under the Ministry of Finance, Ushuru Sacco rebranded in 2002 to reflect its expanded membership following the formation of the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) in 1995. Today, it welcomes members from KRA, government ministries, reputable organizations, and their spouses. With an asset base of over KES 6.12 billion, Ushuru Sacco is among Kenya’s largest deposit-taking Savings and Credit Co-operative Societies, offering robust financial services to its members. Its head office is located at Ushuru Sacco Centre in Kilimani, Nairobi.

Who Can Join?

Ushuru Sacco is a member-owned cooperative open to both resident and non-resident Kenyans worldwide. To be eligible, an individual must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Reside in Kenya (for ordinary residents)
  • Have no convictions for fraud or dishonesty
  • Not be a member of another similar savings and credit cooperative
  • Be an employee of KRA, a government ministry, a reputable company, or a spouse of an existing member
  • Not engage in money lending or activities contrary to the Sacco’s objectives
  • Demonstrate good character

Membership Requirements

To join Ushuru Sacco, applicants must fulfill the following:

  • Application Form: Complete a membership form, available for download on the Sacco’s website or at any branch.
  • Identification: Submit a copy of a National ID.
  • Photograph: Provide a passport-size photo.
  • Entrance Fee: Pay a one-time fee of KES 1,000.
  • Share Capital: Contribute KES 30,000 toward share capital.
  • Monthly Savings: Commit to a minimum monthly savings of KES 3,000.
  • Risk Management Fund (RMF): Contribute KES 300 monthly.
  • Rejoining Fee: Pay KES 3,000 if rejoining after previous membership withdrawal.
