This guide explains how to register copyright Kenya through the Kenya Copyright Board, the statutory agency responsible for administering and enforcing copyright and related rights nationwide. Copyright registration in Kenya is optional, and creators still enjoy full legal protection under the Copyright Act even without registering their works. KECOBO offers registration services for literary, musical, and artistic works, as well as audio-visual content, sound recordings, broadcasts, and similar creative materials.
Copyright ownership normally rests with the original creator. However, the Copyright Act outlines different ownership scenarios depending on how, when, and by whom the work was produced. For works created by two contributors, both individuals are regarded as joint authors. When a work is created under employment or a commissioned assignment, the employer or commissioning party becomes the copyright owner unless contract terms provide otherwise.
Film works follow a dual-ownership model, where the principal director and producer are both considered joint authors and first owners. For sound recordings, the producer is recognized as the author, while broadcasters hold copyright for broadcast content. Published editions belong to the publisher, and materials produced by government departments remain government property. These provisions ensure that every category of creative output aligns with clear authorship and ownership standards.

Steps to Register a Copyright in Kenya
To begin the process, visit https://nrr.copyright.go.ke/ using a computer or mobile device. Create an account by choosing either the individual or corporate option, then upload the work you intend to register. A validation code will be sent to you, and once you enter it, your account setup will be completed.
Next, log in to your account and proceed with the registration of your work. After the submission is accepted, KECOBO processes the application and issues a certificate of registration within five to seven working days. This certificate serves as formal proof of ownership, offering additional protection in case of disputes.

Kenya Copyright Board Contact Information
The Kenya Copyright Board operates from the 5th Floor of the NHIF Building, Community area, at the junction of Ragati Road and Ngong Road in Nairobi. You can reach KECOBO through the phone numbers 0713 761 758 or 020 253 3869 for inquiries or support during the registration process.
