How to Prevent Risky Sexual Behaviour Among Youth

Risky Sexual Behaviour

Sexual behaviour among young people continues to be a major concern across many communities. It is closely linked to early pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), emotional distress, and even school dropouts. While sexuality is a natural part of growth and development, guiding young people toward making informed and responsible decisions is crucial.

Preventing early or risky sexual activity requires a combined effort through education, open communication, positive influence, and strong support systems at home, in schools, and within communities. Below are effective strategies to help youth navigate this important stage of life.

1. Provide Comprehensive Sexual Education

Education remains the most powerful tool in addressing risky behaviour. Both schools and parents should offer accurate, age-appropriate information on sexual health, relationships, consent, body awareness, and the effects of early sexual activity.

Topics such as abstinence, self-control, peer pressure, and the importance of respecting boundaries should be emphasized. When young people understand their bodies and the consequences of their choices, they are better equipped to make safe, responsible decisions.

2. Encourage Open and Honest Communication

Young people need safe, judgment-free spaces where they can openly share their questions, thoughts, and concerns. Parents, guardians, and educators play a vital role in creating this environment.

When adults listen without criticism or punishment, youth are less likely to seek unreliable advice from peers or the internet. Open dialogue fosters trust, keeps communication lines active, and helps guide young people toward healthier choices.

3. Promote Positive Peer Influence

Friends significantly influence behaviour during adolescence. Encouraging youth to form friendships with peers who share positive values—such as focusing on academics, sports, or creative interests—can reduce pressure to engage in sexual activity.

Schools and community programs can further support this by creating mentorship opportunities and youth clubs that encourage healthy, respectful relationships. Older role models can also inspire younger ones through example and guidance.

4. Keep Youth Actively Engaged

Idle time often leads to poor decision-making. Keeping young people engaged in structured activities like sports, music, art, or community service helps them remain goal-oriented and productive.

Such activities not only reduce risky behaviours but also build confidence, skills, and future opportunities, giving youth a sense of purpose and belonging.

5. Strengthen Family Relationships

A strong family unit provides emotional support and moral direction. Parents and caregivers should prioritize quality time with their children, stay informed about their social circles, and actively participate in their daily lives.

When youth feel loved, supported, and guided, they are more likely to uphold family values and avoid choices that could harm their future.

6. Teach the Importance of Goals and Consequences

Helping young people connect their current decisions to long-term outcomes is essential. They should understand that early sexual activity may lead to unplanned pregnancies, health issues, or the interruption of personal goals like completing school or pursuing a career.

Encouraging them to set realistic goals while teaching self-discipline reinforces the idea that wise choices today pave the way for a brighter tomorrow.

7. Address Media and Digital Influence

Modern media and social platforms often glamorize or normalize sexual activity. Without guidance, youth may adopt unrealistic or harmful perceptions of relationships and intimacy.

Parents and educators should promote media literacy by teaching young people how to critically analyze what they see online, in music, and in films. Guiding them toward positive content while limiting harmful exposure strengthens awareness, self-control, and decision-making.

Conclusion

Preventing risky sexual behaviour among youth is not about limiting their freedom—it is about empowering them with the knowledge, values, and support they need to make informed choices. By combining comprehensive education, open dialogue, family support, and positive role models, societies can raise responsible, confident, and goal-driven young people.
