Over time, an iron can accumulate fabric residues, burnt marks, and mineral deposits from steam. When the soleplate becomes dirty, it may stick to clothes or leave stains while ironing. Fortunately, using salt is an easy and affordable way to clean the bottom of your iron and restore its smooth glide. Salt works as a natural, gentle abrasive that removes grime without scratching the metal surface. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide on how to clean an iron with salt effectively.

1. Prepare the Iron for Cleaning

Unplug the iron and ensure it is completely cool before starting. Place it on a flat, stable surface such as an ironing board or countertop. If there is water in the reservoir, empty it first to prevent spills during cleaning.

2. Sprinkle Salt on a Heat-Resistant Surface

Lay out a piece of clean cotton fabric, newspaper, or brown baking paper on your work surface. Sprinkle a thick layer of coarse salt over it — coarse grains are best because they scrub away dirt efficiently without melting too quickly.

3. Heat the Iron to a Low or Medium Setting

Plug in the iron and allow it to warm slightly. Avoid using the steam function during this step. A dry, low heat helps lift the dirt without damaging the surface or wetting the salt. Keep the steam holes dry throughout the process for best results.

4. Rub the Iron Over the Salt

Move the warm iron gently back and forth across the salt with light pressure. The abrasive grains will remove burnt patches, residue, and stains from the soleplate. Continue until you notice the salt turning darker, indicating that it has absorbed the dirt.

5. Turn Off and Cool the Iron

After cleaning, unplug the iron and allow it to cool down completely. Cooling prevents burns and helps the remaining debris loosen naturally from the surface.

6. Wipe the Soleplate Clean

Once the iron has cooled, use a damp cloth to wipe away any leftover salt and loosened dirt. For particles stuck inside the steam holes, gently clean them with a cotton swab. Check that the surface feels smooth and free of residue before moving to the next step.

7. Polish the Soleplate for Shine

To enhance glide performance, buff the soleplate with a soft microfiber cloth. This polishing step removes streaks and restores the iron’s natural shine.

8. Test Before Use

Before ironing your favorite clothes, test the iron on an old towel or piece of fabric. This ensures the soleplate is clean, residue-free, and safe to use on delicate garments.

Cleaning your iron with salt is an eco-friendly and inexpensive way to maintain it. With regular care, your iron will glide smoothly, last longer, and keep your clothes looking crisp and spotless.
