Applying for a Fishing Vessel Permit Uganda is a mandatory process for anyone operating a fishing vessel in Uganda’s waters. Application Procedure

Applicants must apply in person at the Department of Fisheries and Natural Resources under the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries. Start by obtaining the official application form for the Fishing Vessel Permit Uganda from the Ministry offices.

After completing the form, submit it along with the necessary identification documents. The Department will verify the application to ensure the applicant is operating a registered fishing vessel and meets all the set standards.

Next, pay the prescribed license fee. Payments can be made in cash, by cheque payable to the Accountant General, or via credit card (Visa or MasterCard). Once payment is confirmed, the department processes and issues the Fishing Vessel Permit within seven working days.

All fishing vessels must have a valid permit before engaging in fishing operations, and the license must be renewed annually.

Required Documents

To apply for a Fishing Vessel Permit Uganda, submit the following documents:

  • Completed application form from MAAIF

  • Any other documents requested by the Department of Fisheries and Natural Resources

Eligibility

The Fishing Vessel Permit Uganda is issued to vessel owners or operators actively engaged in fishing within Uganda’s territorial waters. Applicants must comply with inspection and operational standards set by the Fisheries Department.

Fees

The Fishing Vessel Permit costs UGX 20,000. Payments are made to the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, and proof of payment must accompany the application.

Validity

The Fishing Vessel Permit Uganda is valid for one year and must be renewed annually before expiry to maintain legal fishing rights.

Processing Time

The Ministry processes the Fishing Vessel Permit within seven days after verification and payment confirmation.

Conditions for Fishing Vessels

All licensed vessels must follow operational regulations:

  • Every fishing vessel must hold a valid Fishing Vessel License to operate in Uganda’s waters.
  • The vessel must display a fishing vessel identification flag on the starboard side during fishing activities.
  • Vessels may be inspected at any time by Fisheries Officers.
  • Fishing on the Uganda platform is prohibited; only offshore pelagic fishing is allowed.
  • Vessel owners/operators must record and submit catch and release data to the Fisheries Department.
  • Any marlin landed must be reported to the Marine Management Section for inspection.
