How to Apply for a Private Health Unit Operating License (Day Care Clinic) in Uganda

If you intend to open a day care clinic in Uganda, obtaining a Private Health Unit Operating License is mandatory. The process involves submitting an application to the Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council. Below are the steps for applying for the license either in person or online:

In-Person Application Procedure

1. Visit the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council Office
   • Collect the application form from the office or visit the Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council’s head office.
   • The application form is specified by the council and must be completed accurately.
2. Submit the Application
   • Complete the application form and ensure you attach all the required documents as per the “Required Documents” section. Incomplete applications will be rejected.
3. Fee Payment
   • Pay a non-refundable application fee of UGX 300,000 to the council. Payment must be made at the designated bank.
4. Investigation and Report
   • Once the council receives your application, they will investigate and prepare a detailed report within 2 days.
5. Notification and License Issuance
   • Within 7 days of submission, the council will notify you of their decision. If approved, the health unit will be granted a license, which will be issued as set out in Form C.
6. Health Unit Publication
   • After registration, the health unit will be published in the Gazette and the license will be valid for one year, requiring annual renewal.
