To operate legally in industrial premises handling food, businesses must apply for a Food Handler Certificate from the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) in Ghana. The certification ensures compliance with food safety standards and regulations.

Step-by-Step Application Process for a Food Handler Certificate:

  1. Visit the FDA Office:
    The applicant should approach the FDA office or the EPA office to get the application form for the Food Handler Certificate.
  2. Complete the Application Form:
    Carefully fill in the application form with the required details. Incomplete forms will not be processed.
  3. Attach Required Documents:
    Attach all necessary documents, including:
    • Photo identity proof of the food business operators
    • Business constitution certificate (partnership deed, incorporation certificate, shop license, etc.)
    • Proof of premises ownership (e.g., rental agreement, NOC from the property owner)
    • Food safety management system plan
    • List of food products manufactured or processed
    • Bank account details
    • Supporting documents (e.g., NOC from the Municipality, health NOC, manufacturer’s license)
  4. Payment of Fees:
    A processing fee of GHS 3,550 is required. Make sure to pay the fee and attach the receipt with your application.
  5. FDA Verification and Approval:
    The FDA will review and verify the submitted documents. If everything is in order, the applicant will receive a notification about the status of their certificate.
  6. Certificate Issuance:
    Once the verification is successful, the applicant can collect their Food Handler Certificate at the FDA office. The certificate will be issued within 30 days.

  • Applicants must be Ghanaian citizens and must provide proof of possession of business or industrial premises for food handling.

  • The processing fee for the Food Handler Certificate is GHS 3,550.

Processing Time:

  • The FDA typically issues the certificate within 30 days of successful application and verification.
