Overview of the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE)

The Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE) is a semi-autonomous government agency under the Ministry of Education. It is located off Kasarani-Mwiki Road in Nairobi and has been a pioneer in training special needs educators since 1986. The institution offers a variety of programs in full-time, distance learning, and evening study modes, catering to both local and international learners.

Diploma Programs in Special Needs Education (SNE)

KISE offers specialized diploma programs targeting various areas of special education, including:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorders
  • Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties
  • Hearing Impairment
  • Deafblindness
  • Intellectual Disabilities
  • Gifted and Talented Learners
  • Visual Impairment
  • Physical Disabilities
  • Learning Disabilities
  • Inclusive Education

Duration: 2 years

Study Modes: Full-time or Distance Learning


Admission Requirements (for Diploma in SNE):

To qualify for the diploma program, applicants must meet any of the following criteria:

  • Hold a P1 Primary Teacher Certificate with at least 2 years of teaching experience.
  • Possess a Certificate in Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) from a recognized institution with at least a KCSE mean grade of D+ or Division II in KCE, along with a minimum of 2 years teaching experience.
  • Be a P1 teacher who was promoted after passing the PTC exam administered by the Ministry of Education.
  • Have a P2 teacher certificate and a certificate in SNE from KISE or another recognized institution, with at least a KCSE grade of D plain or Division IV in KCE, and a minimum of 5 years teaching experience.

KISE also offers short-term certificate programs designed for teachers, caregivers, parents, and professionals interested in inclusive and special needs education.

1. Certificate in Inclusive Education

Eligibility: Open to teachers, caregivers, social workers, Braille transcribers, and individuals with at least a KCSE mean grade of D.
Duration: 3 months

2. Certificate in Kenyan Sign Language

Eligibility: Minimum of KCSE grade D or equivalent.
Duration: 3 months
Total Fee: KES 66,500

3. Certificate in Autism

Duration: 3 months
Total Fee: KES 66,500

4. Certificate in Functional Assessment, Audiology, and Braille Technology

Eligibility: Must hold a Diploma in Special Needs Education with at least KCSE grade D or equivalent.
Duration: 3 months
Total Fee: KES 86,350
