Introduction to KISE and Its Sign Language Training

The Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE) is a semi-autonomous institution under the Ministry of Education. Located off Kasarani-Mwiki Road in Nairobi, KISE has been a leader in special needs education since 1986. Among its wide array of programs, KISE is especially recognized for offering one of the most reputable Kenyan Sign Language (KSL) training programs in the country.

This course equips learners with essential communication skills to interact effectively with members of the deaf community. It is suitable for teachers, caregivers, social workers, parents, and professionals interested in inclusive education or working with learners with hearing impairments.


Overview of the Certificate in Kenyan Sign Language (KSL)

To be eligible for admission into the Certificate in Kenyan Sign Language, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • A minimum KCSE grade of D+ or an equivalent qualification.

Distance Learning Option: Certificate in KSL for Diploma in SNE (Inclusive Education) Graduates

This alternative format is tailored for learners who already hold a Diploma in Special Needs Education (Inclusive Education option). Students in this category are exempted from Session 1 of the course, resulting in reduced tuition costs.
