Sun King Launches Affordable EZ 1 Smartphone with Local Manufacturing

Sun King, renowned for its pay-as-you-go solar solutions, has officially ventured into the smartphone market with the launch of the EZ 1 in Kenya. Manufactured locally at Sun King’s newly opened facility in Nairobi, this marks the company’s first foray into mobile technology. The launch is a significant milestone for Sun King, which has built a strong reputation in Kenya by enabling access to affordable solar energy. Now, the company is applying the same innovative financing model to smartphones, making them more accessible to the majority of Kenyans.

The EZ 1 is designed with entry-level users in mind, particularly those who use their phones primarily for communication, mobile money transactions, browsing, and small business activities. By offering a flexible payment plan, Sun King hopes to eliminate the barrier of high upfront costs that often prevent people from accessing smartphones.

Affordable Financing with the Lipa Pole Pole Plan

The Sun King EZ 1 is available for purchase with a KES 2,999 deposit, followed by daily payments of KES 60 through the Lipa Pole Pole plan. This payment model, which has proven successful in the solar product sector, is tailored to help users manage the cost of their new device without the financial strain of a lump sum payment. The Lipa Pole Pole plan has made solar power accessible to many in Kenya, and now, it’s being applied to smartphones to address the affordability issue that still limits smartphone adoption in the country.

Practical Features for Everyday Use

The Sun King EZ 1 offers a range of features that make it ideal for budget-conscious consumers. With 4GB of RAM and an additional 4GB of virtual RAM, the phone provides adequate speed for daily tasks. The 128GB internal storage is expandable up to 256GB, ensuring users have enough space for their apps, photos, and videos.

The phone also features a 6.56-inch HD+ display, providing a solid viewing experience for video calls, browsing, and media consumption. The 13MP rear camera and 8MP front camera are sufficient for basic photography and selfies, while the 5000mAh battery ensures the device lasts through the day.

Security features include both fingerprint and facial recognition, which are valuable for users who want an extra layer of protection for their devices. To further enhance the value of the device, Sun King offers 1GB of data upon activation, plus 50MB of data daily for the next 60 days. Additionally, the EZ 1 comes with a warranty, ensuring peace of mind for buyers.

Sun King’s Local Manufacturing Expansion

One of the key components behind the EZ 1’s market debut is Sun King’s new manufacturing facility in Nairobi. Opened in October 2025, the plant represents a major investment in local production and assembly, enabling Sun King to produce up to 700,000 units annually. This facility positions Sun King as a scalable production hub for its products in East Africa, enabling them to meet the growing demand for affordable mobile devices in the region.

Sun King’s move into smartphone production aligns with its broader goal of increasing digital inclusion. In Kenya, where electricity access has improved but the high cost of smartphones still limits full participation in the digital economy, the launch of the EZ 1 is seen as a way to bridge this gap.

A Natural Next Step for Sun King

For years, Sun King has been a trusted name in Kenya, with one in five households using its solar products. The company’s decision to expand into smartphones is a natural next step, especially as electricity access continues to improve across the country. By offering a smartphone financing option, Sun King is helping more people in Kenya access the digital economy, empowering them with the tools they need to thrive in an increasingly digital world.

As the smartphone market continues to evolve, Sun King’s focus on affordability and local manufacturing could set a new precedent for how companies can address digital inclusion in emerging markets. The launch of the EZ 1 not only provides affordable smartphones to consumers but also strengthens Sun King’s commitment to driving social impact through accessible technology.

In conclusion, the Sun King EZ 1 is more than just a smartphone; it’s a strategic step toward digital equity in Kenya. By leveraging its successful financing model and local production, Sun King is positioning itself to play a significant role in expanding smartphone access, particularly for Kenya’s entry-level and budget-conscious consumers.
