A research permit extension in Uganda allows researchers to continue their work legally once their initial permit expires. The process is managed by the Uganda National Council for Science and Technology (UNCST) and applies to both Ugandan and non-Ugandan researchers conducting approved studies within the country. Applications must be submitted at least three months before the current permit expires to avoid interruptions.
To apply, researchers should first obtain the “Application for Authority for Extension of Research in Uganda” form from their affiliating institution. After filling it out, the form must be endorsed by the same institution and forwarded to the Executive Secretary, Uganda National Council for Science and Technology, P.O. Box 6884, Kampala. Applications can be delivered by courier or email and must include two copies of all required documents.
Applicants must attach a comprehensive progress report justifying the need for an extension, a sponsor’s letter, and an endorsement letter from the affiliating institution. Payment of renewal fees is also mandatory before approval. Fees vary depending on the research category: Ugandan students pay UGX 40,000, master’s students UGX 400,000, PhD researchers UGX 800,000, and post-doctoral researchers UGX 200,000. Institutional and company researchers pay between UGX 350,000 and UGX 700,000. Long-term projects exceeding five years attract a renewal charge of $300 USD, while Ugandan students pay $50 USD.
Payments should be made directly to UNCST through Standard Chartered Bank. The bank account titles are Uganda National Council for Science and Technology (UNCST) with account numbers 0105610632101 (UGX) and 8705611811400 (USD). Attach the payment receipt to your application before submission. Applicants are encouraged to make cash payments to avoid extra bank fees, and official receipts are issued once UNCST receives proof of payment.
The research permit extension process usually takes about one month if all documents are complete. The renewed permit remains valid for one year for short-term projects (less than three years) and up to two years for long-term projects. Researchers must maintain compliance with national ethics and data standards during the extension period.
The UNCST head office is located at Plot 6, Kimera Road, Ntinda, Kampala, and can be contacted via +256 414 705500 or [email protected]. For additional information and downloadable forms, applicants can visit the official UNCST website.
Renewing a research permit extension is essential because conducting research without a valid license in Uganda is illegal. This process ensures continued compliance with the country’s research regulations and provides legal authorization for ongoing projects under the oversight of UNCST.
