Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban have announced their separation after nearly 20 years of marriage, a source confirmed to the BBC. The Oscar-winning actress and Grammy-winning country singer share two children: Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 14.
The Split
The couple, who married in June 2006, had been living apart since the summer of this year, according to a TMZ report and confirmed by the BBC’s source. The reasoning behind their separation remains unclear. However, sources close to the couple indicated that Kidman did not want the separation, suggesting that it was not a mutual decision.
A Relationship Through Highs and Lows
Kidman and Urban, both of whom grew up in Australia, experienced several highs and lows during their nearly two decades together. On the one hand, both have enjoyed major career successes—Kidman has won an Oscar, while Urban has earned four Grammy Awards. The couple has also consistently supported one another, frequently attending award shows and Hollywood premieres for each other’s projects.
However, their relationship has faced significant challenges as well. Just months after their wedding, Urban checked himself into rehab to treat his drug and alcohol addiction. Both he and Kidman have spoken publicly about how his struggles with addiction tested their marriage but ultimately brought them closer.
In a 2010 appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Urban reflected on how his intervention and recovery had strengthened his bond with Kidman: “Everything was just designed, I believe, for that moment to fuse us together,” he said. “I look back now and realize Nic has taught me so much and brought so much into my life and opened my eyes in so many ways.”
Recent Public Appearances
Despite the news of their separation, Kidman and Urban were seen together just a few months ago. In June, they were photographed attending the FIFA Club World Cup match in Nashville, Tennessee, and in May, they appeared together at the Academy of Country Music Awards, where Urban was honored with the ACM Triple Crown Award. At the event, they were seen holding hands, kissing, and looking lovingly at each other.
Kidman’s Previous Marriage
Kidman, who was previously married to Tom Cruise, has also faced public attention around her relationships. She and Cruise were married for more than 10 years, and they share two children together. Their marriage ended in 2001, a highly publicized divorce at the time.
As news of Kidman and Urban’s separation spreads, fans and the media alike will continue to reflect on the couple’s nearly two-decade-long journey together marked by both public adoration and personal struggles.
