Basic Eligibility Requirements for ATPL in Kenya

To qualify for an ATPL, an applicant must:

  2. Hold a valid Class 1 Medical Certificate issued under the Kenya Civil Aviation Regulations (KCARs).
  3. Fulfill at least one of the following experience prerequisites:
    • Hold a valid Commercial Pilot License (CPL) with an Instrument Rating, or
    • Be a rated or former rated military pilot eligible for conversion to a CPL and Instrument Rating, or
    • Possess a foreign ATPL or CPL with an Instrument Rating from an ICAO member state.
  4. Pass a theoretical knowledge test covering aeronautical subjects relevant to the aircraft category and class.
  5. Meet the required flying hours and aeronautical experience as per KCAA regulations.
  6. Pass a practical flight test for the aircraft type and category being endorsed on the license.
  7. Successfully complete an Instrument Rating (IR) test.
  8. Demonstrate English Language Proficiency at one of the following ICAO levels:
    • Level 4 (Operational): Valid for 3 years
    • Level 5 (Extended): Valid for 6 years
    • Level 6 (Expert): Valid for life

Required Documents and Forms for ATPL Application

Applicants must submit the following:

  1. ATPL application forms:
    • Form M-PEL004-1 (Aeroplanes)
    • Form M-PEL004-2 (Helicopters)
  2. Summary of flying experience form
  3. English Language Proficiency (ELP) application form
  4. Flight Radio Telephony Operator License application form
  5. A valid Class 1 Medical Certificate
  6. Four passport-size photos (2cm x 2.5cm)
  7. A copy of a national ID or passport
  8. Certified copies of the last two pages of your logbook (verified by a flight supervisor with license number and signature)
  9. Application fee: Ksh 8,000

How to Renew Your ATPL in Kenya

To maintain an active ATPL, you must apply for renewal before the license expires. The following are required:

  1. Complete the renewal section of your original ATPL application form:
    • Form M-PEL004-1 (Aeroplanes)
    • Form M-PEL004-2 (Helicopters)
  2. Submit a valid Class 1 Medical Certificate
  3. Provide a summary of recent flight hours (minimum 6 hours required for renewal)
  4. Present a certified flight logbook or alternative flight record
  5. Pay the renewal fee:
    • Ksh 8,000 for applicants below 40 years
    • Ksh 4,000 for applicants aged 40 and above
