How to Change the Time on iPhone Manually or Automatically

Your iPhone automatically sets the correct time based on your location and network, but sometimes you may need to change the time manually — for example, when traveling or correcting display errors. Understanding how to change time on iPhone ensures accurate alarms, reminders, and scheduled tasks. Here’s how to adjust your time settings properly.

Access the Date and Time Settings

Unlock your iPhone and open the Settings app (the grey gear icon). Scroll down and tap General, then select Date & Time. This section lets you view and modify your iPhone’s time configuration.

By default, the Set Automatically option is turned on, allowing your device to use location and network data to determine the correct local time.

Turn Off Automatic Time Setting

To manually change the time, you must first disable the automatic setting. Tap the toggle switch next to Set Automatically to turn it off. Once disabled, manual options for time zone, date, and time will appear.

If this switch appears greyed out, it may be due to carrier restrictions, parental controls, or device management profiles (such as on a work phone). You may need to contact your carrier or administrator to adjust these settings.

Set the Time Manually

After disabling automatic time setting, tap the Time field. A scrolling wheel or clock interface will appear. Adjust the hours and minutes until you reach the correct time, then tap Back to save your changes.

You can also change your time zone by tapping Time Zone, typing your city name, and selecting it from the list. This ensures your iPhone displays the correct local time even when you’re traveling.

Change Time Format (12-Hour or 24-Hour Clock)

To switch between 12-hour and 24-hour formats, stay in the Date & Time menu. Toggle on 24-Hour Time to display hours in the 24-hour (military) format — for example, 15:30 instead of 3:30 PM.

Turning it off will revert your iPhone to the standard 12-hour clock. You can adjust this setting anytime based on your preference.

Check That the Time Is Correct

Return to your Home screen and verify the time shown at the top. It should now reflect your updated settings. If you notice the clock not updating correctly, restart your iPhone and recheck your time zone or manual settings.

Revert to Automatic Settings (Optional)

If you prefer your iPhone to manage time automatically again, go back to Settings > General > Date & Time and toggle Set Automatically back on. Your device will use GPS and network data to maintain accurate time wherever you are.

Why Accurate Time Matters

Keeping your iPhone’s time correct is essential for apps, notifications, and system operations. Services like calendar events, emails, and banking apps rely on the system time for synchronization and security verification. Incorrect settings can lead to missed alerts, sync issues, or authentication errors.

By following these steps, you can change time on iPhone easily and ensure your device stays accurate for everyday use.
