Getting connected to electricity in Uganda is an essential step for any home, business, or factory. The process is handled by the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) and other licensed distributors like Umeme Uganda. Eligibility

The following are eligible to apply for an electricity connection:

  • Individuals who own a completed building.
  • Companies or factories with operational or newly built premises.

The wiring must comply with national electrical safety standards and be certified by a licensed electrician.

Procedure

Step 1: Prepare Your Premises

Ensure that your building is fully wired and earthed by a certified electrician approved by the electricity distribution company. This step is crucial because only installations that meet safety standards can be approved for connection.

Step 2: Obtain and Fill Out the Application Form

Visit the nearest UEDCL or Umeme office to get the electricity application form. Fill in all the required information, including your personal details, type of service (domestic or commercial), and location.

Step 3: Pay the Surveying Fee

Pay a surveying fee of UGX 43,000 (about $18) at any designated bank in Uganda. For commercial connections, the fee may vary slightly based on load requirements.

Step 4: Submit Your Application

Submit the completed form with your payment receipt and supporting documents to the nearest electricity office.

Step 5: Site Inspection and Verification

An installation inspector or surveyor will visit your premises to verify that the wiring and earthing comply with safety and technical standards.

  • If the inspection passes, an AD-20 Form will be issued.
  • The inspection usually takes 5 days to 2 weeks depending on the workload and location.

Step 6: Payment of Capital Contribution and Security Deposit

Once your installation is approved, you’ll be required to pay the following fees based on your connection type:

  • Fully filled application form.
  • Sketch map showing your location and nearest customer account number.
  • Proof of ownership (for landlords).
  • Tenancy agreement and passport-size photo of the landlord (for tenants).
  • Valid ID (National ID, passport, or driving permit).
  • Company stamp (for business or institutional connections).
  • Type of service (domestic or commercial).
