Eligibility
Anyone engaged in electrical installation work within Uganda must obtain a valid permit. Applicants are classified based on their academic qualifications as follows:

Types of Permits
The Installation Permits Committee may issue the following categories of permits:
- Class A: For all classes of electrical installation work.
- Class B: For medium-value or complex work, including heavy low voltage and simple high voltage up to 11 kV.
- Class C: For small installations such as multi-storey flats, commercial buildings, and plants up to 415 volts.
- Class D: For residential premises (up to five bedrooms) and repairs on 240-volt equipment.
- Class Z: For specialized works like switchgear, generators, solar systems, refrigeration, and design systems.
ProcedureApply In-Person
- Write to the Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA) using the approved installation permit application form.
- Submit your application to the ERA Head Office or regional branch.
- Appear before the interview panel with original certificates, testimonials, and identification.
- Present your technical qualifications and demonstrate your competence in electrical installation work.
- The Installation Permit Committee will verify and process your application.
- Once approved, you will be issued a permit or licence after paying the required fees.

Scan and upload all required documents and proof of fee payment to your device.
- Visit the ERA website and open the online application portal.
- Read the instructions carefully and fill in the online application form accurately.
- Upload the required documents and your payment bank slip, then click “Next.”
- Verify all the information before submitting the form.
- Your application will be reviewed by the Installation Permits Committee.
- If approved, you will receive your electrical installation permit upon payment confirmation.

- Detailed CV or career report (for Classes A, B, and Z).
- Annual returns (for companies) dating three years back with tax clearance evidence.
- Copies of academic and technical certificates, such as:
- Craftsman’s Certificate or Intermediate Certificate
- Master Craftsman’s Certificate
- Technicians Diplomas (Ordinary or Higher)
- University Degree in Electrical or related field
- Any other qualification recognized by ERA.

Every applicant must pay a UGX 20,000 application fee, plus the following permit fees:

Validity
