Google has unveiled plans for deeper AI integration within Gmail, introducing a set of tools powered by Gemini AI to help users automate their inboxes and make email management more efficient. This new initiative, called AI Overviews, will first be available to US users and English speakers, with wider availability expected in the coming months.
What AI Overviews Does
The AI Overviews system will serve two primary functions: synthesizing email conversations into summaries of key points and searching through inboxes for relevant information. Users can simply ask questions like “Who was the plumber that gave me a quote for the bathroom renovation last year?” in the Gmail inbox search bar, and Gemini’s advanced reasoning will pull the exact details needed, summarizing the information instantly.
Currently, AI Overviews for email conversations is available to all Gmail users at no cost. However, the inbox search feature is only available to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.
AI Inbox and Automated To-Do Lists
In addition to AI Overviews, Google is testing a new AI Inbox with “trusted testers.” This tool automatically summarizes emails and compiles a personalized to-do list, highlighting high-priority items such as bills due tomorrow or appointment reminders. AI Inbox aims to act like a personalized briefing, helping users stay on top of important tasks and messages.
AI-Powered Email Writing Tools
Google is also enhancing Gmail with AI-powered writing tools like Help Me Write and Suggested Replies. These tools help draft or edit emails in a user’s tone and style. Suggested Replies generates a response draft that users can refine before sending, while Help Me Write offers more extensive email drafting support.
For users looking for advanced grammar checks, the new Proofread feature offers tone, style, and grammar checks, but it is only available to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.
Can You Turn Off Gmail’s AI Features?
While AI Overviews and the new writing tools offer significant convenience, Google’s integration of generative AI in Gmail isn’t perfect. Some features, like AI Overviews, have raised concerns about their accuracy, particularly after reports of misleading health advice in search results.
As Google rolls out these features more widely, users will have the option to turn them off. However, disabling these features could also mean losing other tools, such as spell checking. Users can manage AI features in Google Workspace settings, though the specifics of disabling them were not immediately available.
Despite the growing use of AI in Gmail, Google acknowledges the need for accuracy and transparency. The tools aim to save time and improve efficiency, but users should remain cautious about relying on them completely.
