Kimani Mbugua, the former Citizen TV journalist, has passed away at the age of 29. His untimely death on the night of October 14, 2025, comes after a long public battle with mental health issues, notably bipolar disorder. In a candid interview, he revealed the personal toll the condition had taken on him. “I fell ill in 2020… I’ve lost so many friends along the journey. People got tired of me,” he shared.

In 2023, he opened up about his struggles in a viral video, where he appealed for help. “Hi guys, Kimani Mbugua here, former star of TV… niko kwa shida, and I need your help,” his emotional plea captured the attention of many Kenyans, drawing sympathy and support from across the nation. His mental health battles led him to several hospitalizations and rehabilitation periods, including stays at Mathari Mental Hospital and the Mombasa Women Empowerment Network Rescue Centre.
His family, including his sister Wanjiku Mbugua, shared their own heartache as they watched him transition from a devout Seventh-day Adventist to someone grappling with severe mental illness and addiction. “He was our only brother, very prayerful and close to the family. It was painful to watch him struggle,” she said.

He held a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations and a Master’s in Nationalism and Ethnic Conflict from the University of London. Kimani’s career began at Nation Media Group as a trainee before he went on to join Royal Media Services. He worked across platforms including Citizen TV, Inooro FM, and Hot 96, earning a reputation as one of the brightest young stars in Kenyan media.
