All dental practitioners in Uganda must obtain an annual dentist practice licence from the Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council (UMDPC) before engaging in public or private practice. This requirement ensures that all practitioners meet professional standards, maintain continuous education, and are recognized as legitimate healthcare providers.
The UMDPC issues two categories of licences — one for specialists and another for general practitioners, each renewable annually.
Step-by-Step Procedure
Step 1: Application Advertisement and Form Collection
Every year, the Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council publishes an advertisement calling for dental practitioners to renew or apply for an annual practising licence. Interested applicants must collect and fill Form CPD 2A, available at the UMDPC offices or from the official website.
Step 2: Prepare Required Documents
Attach the following documents to your completed form:
- Copy of full registration certificate or previous annual practising licence.
- Duly filled annual practising licence application form.
- Verified Continuing Medical Education (CME) certificate for the previous year.
- Applicant’s name, qualification, and address.
- Employment number (if applicable).
Incomplete applications will not be considered for review.
Step 3: Submit the Application
Submit your completed application form and all attachments to the Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council office in Kampala.
Applications can also be delivered through district medical offices that coordinate with UMDPC.
Once received, the application is forwarded to the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Accreditation and Certification Committee, which evaluates eligibility using standard assessment criteria.
Step 4: Committee Review and Approval
The CPD Accreditation Committee reviews your documentation to verify compliance with the required professional standards and continuous education performance.
After evaluation, the committee submits its recommendations to the UMDPC Board for final approval.
If your application meets all standards, the Council issues your Dentist Practice Licence.
Step 5: Licence Collection
Applicants can collect their Dentist Practice Licence from the UMDPC head office within 14 working days after submission if there are no rejections.
You must present identification and proof of payment when collecting your licence.
