Kenyan citizens applying for or renewing their travel documents are required to transition to the e-passport. The Kenyan e-passport comes with an embedded electronic chip that stores the passport holder’s biometric and personal information. This upgrade enhances security and allows for faster clearance at border points both locally and internationally.

Below is a comprehensive guide on the current requirements, application steps, and official fees associated with acquiring a Kenyan e-passport.

Types of Kenyan e-Passports

Kenya issues different types of e-passports, including:

  • Ordinary Passport – For general public use.
  • Diplomatic Passport – Issued to senior government officials and diplomats.

Each e-passport features an international e-passport symbol on the cover, indicating that it contains an electronic chip.
