Each e-passport features an international e-passport symbol on the cover, indicating that it contains an electronic chip.
Requirements for Applying for a Kenyan e-Passport (2025)
To successfully apply for a Kenyan e-passport, you will need the following documents:
- A completed e-passport application form downloaded from the eCitizen portal and three printed copies of the payment receipt.
- Original birth certificate and a photocopy.
- National ID card (original and photocopy).
- Three recent passport-sized photos (must meet official specifications).
- A copy of your recommender’s national ID.Acceptable recommenders include:
- Religious leaders
- Lawyers
- Doctors
- Bankers
- Civil servants
- Consent letter for applicants below 18 years.
- Previous passport (for replacement applications).
- Copies of both parents’ national ID cards (in the case of minors).
Step-by-Step Process for Applying for a Kenyan e-Passport
- Create an account or log in to eCitizen.
- Navigate to the Department of Immigration Services section.
- Select “Passport Application” and carefully read the provided instructions.
- Fill in the application form online and select your preferred mode of payment.
- Pay the relevant application fee.
- Print the completed application form along with three copies of the payment receipt.

Important Notes
- All old-generation passports were phased out as of August 2019. Only the new e-passports are valid for international travel.
