Plan and Choose the Right Location

The first step in building your braai is selecting the right location. Follow these tips to find the perfect spot:

  • Choose a flat, well-ventilated area for safety and comfort.
  • Ensure it is a safe distance from your house, trees, and anything flammable.
  • Plan enough space for cooking and gathering comfortably.
  • Convenience is key: placing the braai near your outdoor dining area or kitchen makes cooking and serving easier.

Choosing the right location ensures that your braai is both functional and safe.

Gather Materials and Tools

To build a basic brick braai, you’ll need the following materials:

  • Bricks, cement, sand, and gravel (for the structure and base).
  • A metal grill for cooking.
  • Chimney pipe (optional, for more advanced designs).

You’ll also need tools such as:

  • Shovel, trowel, measuring tape, level, and wheelbarrow.

For a portable braai, you can use metal sheets, a steel frame, or even a converted oil drum.

Prepare the Foundation

A strong foundation is crucial for stability. Here’s how to prepare it:

  1. Mark the area where the braai will stand.
  2. Dig a shallow trench (10 to 15 cm deep).
  3. Fill the trench with a mixture of gravel and cement to form a solid base.
  4. Level the surface carefully, and allow it to dry completely.

A strong, even foundation ensures that the braai is stable and durable for long-lasting use.

Build the Brick Structure

Once the foundation is dry, start laying the first row of bricks using cement mortar. Follow these steps:

  1. Ensure each brick is level before adding the next one.
  2. Build up the structure layer by layer, leaving space for the cooking chamber.
  3. Height: Most braais are about 80 to 100 cm tall.
  4. Create side walls to hold the grill in place, and leave an open area at the bottom for wood or charcoal storage.
  5. Smooth the cement joints with the trowel for a clean finish.

Be sure to check level as you build to avoid any instability.

Install the Grill and Finishing Touches

Once the brick structure is complete, it’s time to install the grill and add the finishing touches:

  1. Fit the metal grill securely into the top section of the braai.
  2. Add metal bars or brackets to adjust the grill’s height as needed.
  3. For a more advanced design, you can install a chimney for ventilation or a small metal door to control airflow.
  4. Clean excess cement and let the structure dry for at least 24 hours before using it.

Proper ventilation is essential for a smooth cooking experience.

Test and Enjoy Your Braai

After the cement has dried, it’s time to test your braai. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Light a small fire to check the airflow and stability.
  2. Ensure smoke flows out easily and that the structure is steady.

Once everything is working properly, you’re ready to cook! A well-built braai is not just a cooking tool, but also enhances the beauty of your outdoor space, becoming the center of many enjoyable gatherings.

Final Thoughts

Building a braai is a rewarding project that enhances your outdoor cooking space while teaching valuable skills like planning, construction, and problem-solving. With proper planning, materials, and care, you can create a functional and attractive braai that serves as the heart of many family gatherings and barbecues. Whether you opt for a simple setup or a more permanent brick structure, your braai will add enjoyment and value to your home. Happy grilling!
