Bowen Yang, the talented comedian who became a fan favorite on Saturday Night Live (SNL), will leave the show mid-season after his final episode hosted by his friend, Ariana Grande, on Saturday. Yang, who joined SNL as a writer in 2018, transitioned to a featured player the following year, before being promoted to the main cast after two seasons. Over the course of his tenure, Yang earned five Emmy nominations, showcasing his impact on the iconic sketch comedy show.
While SNL representatives declined to comment on Yang’s departure, he shared a heartfelt message on Instagram, reflecting on his time at the show. Yang wrote, “I loved working at SNL, and most of all I loved the people. I was there at a time when many things in the world started to seem futile, but working at 30 Rock taught me the value in showing up anyway when people make it worthwhile.”
Yang’s departure came after a significant change in the SNL cast lineup during the summer, which saw several long-standing members leave before the start of Season 51. However, his exit was not entirely unexpected, as he had previously discussed the possibility with SNL creator Lorne Michaels. In an interview, Yang recalled Michaels encouraging him to stay on the show, stating, “You have more to do,” which gave Yang the confidence to continue for a while longer.
Yang’s time at SNL included many standout moments, such as his memorable portrayal of the Titanic iceberg on Weekend Update, his comedic roles as George Santos and a gay Oompa Loompa, and his sharp political spoofs. One of his most popular performances was his impersonation of Vice President JD Vance. Despite his success, Yang emphasized that his work is about more than just the roles he plays, as he revealed in his recent cover feature for Esquire, where he noted the need to avoid being pigeonholed by his queer and Asian identity.
Beyond SNL, Yang continues to expand his career in various media, co-hosting the Las Culturistas podcast with fellow comedian Matt Rogers. He also appeared in the hit musical Wicked and starred in the 2023 comedy Dicks: The Musical, as well as Fire Island in 2022. Yang is set to return to more pop culture comedy with Rogers next year.
In addition to his on-screen success, Yang shared advice he received from Kristen Wiig during her SNL hosting gig: “Have fun. It’s the most fun job in the world, and you’ll miss it when it’s done.” As he bids farewell to SNL, it’s clear that Yang’s impact on the show and its fans will be remembered for years to come.
