Step-by-Step Process for Adopting a Child in Ghana:

  1. Visit the Social Welfare Department:
Start by visiting the Social Welfare Department in Ghana. A social worker will explain the process and take you through the necessary paperwork and formalities required for the adoption registration.
  2. Complete the Application Form:
After the consultation, the social worker will provide you with the application form. You must fill it out carefully, ensuring all necessary information is included. Incomplete applications will not be accepted.
  3. Submit Required Documents:
Attach all the required documents to your completed application form, such as:
    • Marriage certificate (if applicable)
    • Proof of age for both parents
    • Income certificate
    • Proof of residence
    • Reference letters from three people
    • Latest HIV and Hepatitis B reports for both parents
    • Investment details and more
  4. Home Study and Counseling:
The social worker will conduct a home study within three months of your registration. During this time, the agency will also conduct a counseling session to better understand your intentions and readiness to adopt.
  5. Child Profile:
Once the preparation is complete, the agency will inform you about a child ready for adoption. They will share the child’s medical reports, physical examination results, and other relevant details for you to review.
  6. Meeting the Child:
You may meet the child once you are comfortable with the provided details. After your meeting, if you choose the child, you will need to sign a set of documents, which will be submitted to the court by a lawyer.
  7. Court Petition and Hearing:
The petition for adoption will be submitted to the court, where you must sign it in front of a court officer. During the court hearing, the judge will ask a few questions about the child and adoption process. They will also discuss an investment amount that needs to be made in the child’s name.
  8. Final Adoption Order:
Once you provide proof of the investment, the judge will issue the adoption order.
  9. Follow-up Reports:
After adoption, the agency will submit follow-up reports to the court for the next two years.

Required Documents:

  • Adoption application
  • 4×6 size photographs (4 copies, including husband and wife together)
  • Marriage certificate and proof of age
  • Reason for adoption
  • Latest HIV and Hepatitis B report for both parents
  • Income certificate and proof of residence
  • Investment details and more

Eligibility:

  • The adoptive parent(s) must be Ghanaian citizens or foreign citizens.
  • Couples must have been married for at least two years and both should have a joint consensus on adopting.
  • There should be at least 25 years of age difference between the child and adoptive parents.

Fees:

  • Attorney fees range between GHC 2,000 and GHC 3,000, which include court costs.
  • The total cost for adopting from West Africa can range between $20,000 and $40,000, covering medical expenses, home study, foster care, and other associated fees.

Processing Time:

  • After signing the adoption petition, the court hearing will take 1 to 2 months.

Other Uses of the Adoption Certificate:

Once you finalize the adoption, the adoption certificate legally recognizes the child as part of your family. It can be used for legal matters, including nationality documentation, passport applications, and other official purposes.
