The National Youth Service (NYS) is a state corporation in Kenya established to equip young people with skills, discipline, and values necessary for nation-building. Since its inception in 1964, NYS has played a pivotal role in training and empowering Kenyan youth through paramilitary training, technical and vocational skills development, national service, and participation in socio-economic projects.

Operating under the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports, NYS has been instrumental in molding disciplined, skilled, and productive citizens who contribute to Kenya’s development agenda. Over the decades, it has produced graduates who serve in various sectors such as engineering, agriculture, construction, healthcare, and national security.


Core Mandate of the National Youth Service

The NYS is tasked with:

  1. Youth Training and Skills Development – Offering technical and vocational training in fields like mechanics, engineering, tailoring, catering, agriculture, and ICT.
  2. National Service – Deploying members in community service, environmental conservation, infrastructure projects, and national security assignments.
  3. Disaster Response – Assisting during emergencies such as floods, droughts, and other humanitarian crises.
  4. Economic Empowerment – Providing graduates with entrepreneurship skills and linking them to job opportunities in the public and private sectors.
  5. Patriotism and Discipline – Instilling national values, discipline, and unity through structured training programs.

Key NYS Training Units and Institutions

  • Paramilitary and Discipline Training Unit – Prepares recruits for resilience, leadership, and teamwork.
  • Technical and Vocational Training Colleges – Offer accredited courses in various trades.
  • Agricultural Training Units – Provide hands-on agricultural skills for food security projects.
  • Specialized Units – Such as engineering, construction, and health services teams deployed nationwide.

Major NYS Programs and Projects

  • Youth Skills Development Program – Offers both formal and informal training targeting school leavers.
  • Kazi Mtaani & Public Works Support – Provides temporary jobs for urban youth to improve public spaces.
  • Infrastructure Development Projects – Involvement in building roads, bridges, and other essential infrastructure.
  • Environmental Conservation Initiatives – Tree planting, water conservation, and waste management.

Eligibility for NYS Recruitment

Applicants must meet specific requirements, including:
