In its latest effort to safeguard digital platforms from state-backed propaganda, Google has removed nearly 11,000 YouTube channels and other associated accounts during the second quarter of 2025. The removals target coordinated influence operations tied to China, Russia, and several other countries, according to data from Google’s Threat Analysis Group (TAG) and a recent report by CNBC.
China-Linked Content Floods YouTube
A significant portion of the crackdown more than 7,700 YouTube channels was attributed to influence operations originating from China. These channels published videos in both Chinese and English, often promoting positive narratives about President Xi Jinping and the People’s Republic of China. Much of the content also sought to reframe U.S. foreign policy through a pro-Beijing lens, subtly reinforcing China’s geopolitical messaging.
Russia’s Multilingual Propaganda Push
More than 2,000 accounts were linked to Russia-backed disinformation, many of which disseminated content in multiple languages. These posts commonly supported Russia’s actions in Ukraine, criticized NATO and Western alliances, and questioned the integrity of democratic institutions. Google has been closely monitoring Russian influence campaigns since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in early 2022.
RT’s Covert Influence Network Exposed
Among the removals were 20 YouTube channels, 4 Google Ads accounts, and 1 Blogger site associated with RT (Russia Today), a Russian state media outlet already banned from YouTube since March 2022.
Google’s investigation revealed that these accounts were part of a broader covert campaign operated through Tenet Media, a U.S.-based production firm. Allegedly, Tenet Media received $10 million in undisclosed funding from RT to finance content that promoted pro-Russian viewpoints. The campaign reportedly aimed to influence American public opinion ahead of the 2024 U.S. election by recruiting conservative influencers to distribute Kremlin-aligned content disguised as independent analysis.
Global Scope: Influence Operations from 8+ Countries
Beyond China and Russia, Google also disrupted influence campaigns tied to Iran, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Israel, Ghana, and Romania. Many of these efforts sought to target political opponents, amplify division, and exploit ongoing global tensions by pushing misleading or emotionally charged narratives.
Maintaining Trust and Platform Integrity
“YouTube began blocking RT channels in 2022, and the findings from this latest report are in line with our expectations from this regular and ongoing work,” a YouTube spokesperson stated.
Google emphasized that these removals reflect a persistent global effort to combat state-linked manipulation, protect users, and uphold trust in its platforms.
This crackdown follows a similar cleanup in Q1 2025, during which over 23,000 accounts were taken down for engaging in coordinated influence activities.
Meta’s Parallel Cleanup Efforts
Other tech giants are also taking action. Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, reported removing nearly 10 million fake or impersonating accounts during the first half of 2025. These accounts were primarily involved in spreading recycled content, impersonating content creators, or engaging in inauthentic behavior.
An additional 500,000 accounts were flagged and had their content distribution limited due to violations of community standards.
