The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Elephant Orphanage, often referred to as the Nairobi Nursery, is one of Kenya’s most celebrated conservation centres. Located within Nairobi National Park, it operates through the KWS Central Workshop Gate along Magadi Road.
Founded in 1977, the orphanage has played a vital role in rescuing and rehabilitating more than 260 orphaned elephant calves, offering them a second chance at life in the wild. The centre is internationally recognized for its commitment to wildlife conservation and is open to visitors for one hour daily – from 11:00 am to 12:00 noon.
Why Visit the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage?
Visitors to the Nursery get a unique chance to witness the Trust’s conservation efforts firsthand. During the one-hour session, you’ll see the young elephants being bottle-fed and enjoy their playful interaction with mud and dust — a natural part of their development.
This rare experience not only educates the public about elephant conservation but also supports the Trust’s work through donations and entry fees.
Important: Entry is strictly by advance booking. Due to limited capacity, it’s best to reserve early to avoid missing out.
