Meta is significantly enhancing privacy and personalization on WhatsApp with the introduction of a highly anticipated new feature: Close Friends for Status updates. This update, mirroring a popular Instagram capability, is designed to give users more control over who sees their daily moments, fostering more intimate and trusted sharing within the app.
Initially spotted in a recent iOS beta release, this feature directly caters to WhatsApp’s massive base of over 1.5 billion daily Status users. It represents a strategic move to not only improve user experience but also to deepen integration across Meta’s family of apps.
How the “Close Friends” Feature Works
The new tool allows users to create a dedicated, curated list of their most trusted contacts directly within WhatsApp’s privacy settings.
- Curated Sharing: Once the list is created, users can choose to share any Status update—be it a photo, video, or text—exclusively with this group, rather than their entire contact list.
- Visual Distinction: To provide a clear signal of its private nature, updates shared with Close Friends will be marked with a special colored ring around the Status icon, letting recipients know the content was shared with them specifically.
- Complete Privacy: The list itself is entirely private. No one can see if they are on your Close Friends list or if they have been removed.
- Not Retroactive: The privacy is forward-looking. Adding someone to your list later will not grant them access to Status updates you posted before they were added.
Crucially, these updates remain protected by WhatsApp’s foundational end-to-end encryption and will still disappear after 24 hours, maintaining the platform’s commitment to security.
Why This Feature Matters
While WhatsApp already offers granular privacy controls (“Only Share With,” “My Contacts Except”), they require manual adjustment for every single post. The Close Friends feature simplifies this process dramatically. You set your inner circle once, and then with one tap, you can share privately anytime, reducing friction and encouraging more genuine sharing.
This update is also a clear indication of Meta’s strategy to create a consistent, interoperable experience across its apps, encouraging users to engage with its ecosystem in a familiar way.
A Broader Wave of Enhancements
The Close Friends feature is part of a larger suite of recent updates aimed at making WhatsApp more powerful, secure, and user-friendly:
- AI Chat Assistant: Meta AI is integrated directly into chats to help draft messages, answer questions, and generate images.
- Search by Date: A highly requested feature that allows users to jump to a specific date in a chat history, eliminating endless scrolling.
- Multiple Accounts: Users can now seamlessly switch between two WhatsApp accounts on a single device, ideal for separating work and personal life.
- HD Media Sharing: Users can now send photos and videos in “HD Quality” to preserve clarity and detail.
- Enhanced Security: Features like Chat Lock (to protect sensitive conversations with a password or biometrics) and Passkey support (for more secure logins) continue to bolster user privacy.
Availability and Rollout
As of now, the Close Friends feature is only available to a limited number of users enrolled in the iOS Beta program. WhatsApp has not yet announced an official timeline for its release to Android users or the general public.
However, given the proven success of an identical feature on Instagram, a global rollout to all users is highly anticipated in the coming months. As with most WhatsApp features, its final form and release schedule will be influenced by feedback from this beta testing phase.
