How to Become a Registered Architect in Uganda

To become a registered architect in Uganda, one must meet specific academic, professional, and ethical standards as set by the Architects Registration Board (ARB) under the Architects Registration Act. Registration is mandatory for anyone who wishes to practice architecture professionally in Uganda, whether as a local or foreign practitioner.

Once approved, the applicant’s name is entered into the Register of Architects, and a registration number is assigned. Practicing architects are also required to renew their annual practising licences to maintain active status.

Step-by-Step Procedure

Step 1: Obtain Academic Qualification

You must hold a professional qualification in architecture from a university or institution accredited by the Commonwealth Association of Architects (CAA) or an equivalent recognized body.

For Ugandans who studied abroad, a letter of equivalence must be obtained from the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) to verify that the qualification meets local standards.

Step 2: Gain Practical Experience

Applicants must have completed at least two years of practical experience under the supervision of a Registered Architect. This experience should cover various aspects of architectural practice, including design, project management, supervision, and documentation.

Step 3: Pass the Professional Practice Examination

All applicants must successfully complete the Professional Practice Examination (PPE) for architects, which consists of three components:

  • Case Study
  • Written Examination
  • Oral Examination

Passing the PPE demonstrates that the applicant has the professional competence and ethical understanding required to practice architecture independently.

Step 4: Submit Application to the Architects Registration Board

After completing the above steps, applicants must fill and submit Form AR to the Architects Registration Board (ARB). The application should be submitted in duplicate, bound in one file folder, with all required attachments.

  • Recommendation letter from your country’s board (for foreign applicants).
  • Three sponsors’ signatures and stamps from registered architects.

  • Certified copies of academic certificates.

  • Valid ID or passport (color copy, signed).
  • Passport-size photograph (color).
  • Certificate of good conduct (for non-Ugandans).

Step 7: Approval and Registration

The Architects Registration Board will review your application and, if satisfied, approve it. Upon approval, your name will be entered in the Register of Architects and assigned a unique registration number.

Applicants will receive official notification and can then apply for their annual practising licence to begin professional work.

Processing Time: Up to 30 working days.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for registration, an applicant must:

  • Be a corporate member of the Uganda Society of Architects (USA).
  • Hold a degree or diploma in architecture from a recognized institution.
  • Have at least two years of practical experience.
  • Have passed the Professional Practice Examination.
  • Provide evidence of good professional conduct.
  • Submit all documentation in duplicate.

Validity

Registration as an architect is permanent, but practising requires an annual licence renewal. Renewal is based on:

  • Proof of good standing.
  • Completion of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements.
  • Payment of the annual licence fee.

Required Information

Applicants must provide the following on the registration form:

  • Full name and contact details.
  • Nationality and ID/passport number.

  • Information on practical training (dates, names of supervising architects, responsibilities held).
  • References from supervising architects.
  • Proof of corporate membership and payment receipts.
  • Tax compliance documents (Trading Licence, NSSF, VAT registration).

Need for the Document

The Architect Registration Certificate authorizes an individual to legally practice architecture in Uganda. It ensures that all architects meet the professional, ethical, and technical standards required to safeguard public safety, building quality, and environmental integrity.

Without registration, one cannot legally offer or sign off on architectural services in Uganda.

Additional Information

  • Applications for temporary registration cost UGX 1,000,000.
  • Temporary practising certificates cost UGX 300,000.
  • Non-Ugandans must submit passport details and foreign practising licences.
  • The ARB reserves the right to deny registration if the applicant’s conduct or qualifications do not meet the required standards.
