A rare and legendary piece of racing history has made its return to the track. The Nissan Skyline GT-R GT1, last seen in action at the Suzuka circuit in 1995, has been fully restored and is now making its mark at Blyton Park, Lincolnshire. Known for its immense power and raw, unfiltered performance, this car holds an irreplaceable place in motorsport history, and its revival has sparked excitement among enthusiasts and fans alike.

The Legacy of the Nissan Skyline GT-R GT1

The Nissan Skyline GT-R GT1 was a product of Hasemi Motorsport’s efforts to evolve the iconic Skyline GT-R into a formidable contender for the new GT1 ruleset in 1994. As part of the semi-works NISMO-backed team, the GT1 was not just a race car but a vital piece in Nissan’s larger plan for their Le Mans assault in 1995. Built with a rear-wheel-drive layout, carbon fiber body, and an upgraded RB26 engine, this car was a true evolution of the legendary GT-R, transforming it from a Group A beast to a GT1 racer.

In 1995, the Skyline GT-R GT1 set pole position at the All Japan Grand Touring Car Championship, ahead of fierce competition from 4WD Skylines, Ferrari F40 LMs, and Porsche 993 GT2s. Though it finished fourth in the race due to tire wear, its incredible performance made it a standout contender in the championship.

The Return to Blyton Park

Fast forward to today, and the Nissan Skyline GT-R GT1 has resurfaced after an extensive restoration by Group A Fabrication. It’s now sporting over 500bhp, up from its original output of around 450bhp with the restrictor plate in place. The car’s original six-speed XTrac sequential gearbox, SSR magnesium wheels, and the unmistakable sound of the RB26 engine are all intact, ensuring that the GT1 is as menacing and thrilling as it was in its prime.

On the track at Blyton Park, the car feels alive, with every corner and kerb giving feedback through the steering and chassis. The weight distribution has been optimized, providing exceptional handling and a thrilling driving experience. It’s a testament to the raw mechanical power and the driving dynamics of the Nissan Skyline GT-R GT1, proving that its legendary status is well-deserved.

A New Chapter for Godzilla

The Nissan Skyline GT-R GT1 has now entered a new chapter of its story. With plans for future races and more appearances on tracks, the legend of “Godzilla” is far from over. Its powerful engine, sleek body, and racing pedigree continue to capture the imagination of car enthusiasts and motorsport fans across the globe. The return of the GT1 to the track is not only a celebration of Nissan’s engineering excellence but also a nod to the car’s mythic status in motorsport history.
