Overview SMEP Microfinance Bank began its journey in 1975 as a relief initiative under the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) to support vulnerable children in Mathare Valley. It evolved into a full-fledged microfinance institution and was licensed in December 2010 as a deposit-taking microfinance bank. In 2012, SMEP became the first microfinance institution in Africa to offer Visa debit cards.
