Autofit in Excel is a simple tool that automatically adjusts column widths and row heights so they fit the content inside each cell. Instead of dragging borders manually or estimating the right size, Autofit reshapes your worksheet instantly, helping you maintain a clean, readable, and organized layout. Whether your data includes long text, numerical values, or section headers, this feature ensures nothing is hidden or clipped. Understanding how to use Autofit in Excel can significantly improve your speed and efficiency when managing large or detailed spreadsheets.

Start by Selecting the Row or Column to Resize
Begin by opening your Excel sheet and selecting the column or row you want to adjust. Click the column letter to highlight a full column or tap the row number to select an entire row. Choosing the correct area ensures that the adjustment applies exactly where you need it.

Use the Double-Click Shortcut for Fast Autofit
A quick way to apply Autofit is to double-click a boundary line. Hover your mouse between two column letters—like between A and B—until the pointer becomes a double-sided arrow. Double-click, and Excel instantly adjusts the width to match the longest entry. The same technique works for rows by clicking the borders between row numbers.

Access Autofit Through the Ribbon Toolbar
If you prefer using the ribbon menu, Excel offers dedicated Autofit commands. After selecting your row or column, go to the Home tab. Under the Cells group, click Format. Choose either Autofit Column Width or Autofit Row Height, and Excel will automatically resize the selection based on the content.

Autofit Multiple Rows or Columns at Once
When working with many rows or columns, you can resize them all together. Select multiple areas by dragging your mouse or holding Ctrl while clicking. Once highlighted, double-click any boundary or use the ribbon method. Excel will Autofit all selected rows or columns in a single action.

Add Manual Adjustments for Extra Spacing
Although Autofit gives precise results, you may want a little more space around your content for better clarity. After applying Autofit, you can still drag a border to widen or heighten the cell area manually. This allows you to fine-tune the layout and create a cleaner, more visually appealing spreadsheet.
