As part of regulatory compliance with the Communications Authority of Kenya (CAK), all mobile service providers, including Safaricom, are required to ensure that customer SIM card registration details are accurate, up-to-date, and verifiable.
This guide explains the process of updating your SIM card registration, the requirements, and how to check which numbers are registered under your ID.
Why Updating Your Safaricom SIM Details Matters
Updating your registration ensures:
- Continued access to M-PESA and Safaricom services
- Compliance with government regulations
- Protection from SIM fraud and identity theft
- Prevention of line disconnection or suspension
If your registration is incomplete or outdated, you’ll receive SMS reminders from Safaricom prompting you to update your records.
Requirements for Safaricom SIM Registration Update
To update your SIM details, visit any Safaricom Shop, authorized dealer, or agent near you with the following:
- Original identification document used during the initial SIM registration (e.g., National ID, Passport, Alien ID, Military ID).
- Your signature, which will be captured digitally during the process.
- A passport-size photo, which will be taken at the point of registration for verification and security.
Special Cases:
- If the line was originally registered using another person’s ID, that individual must also be present with their original ID to complete a SIM ownership transfer.
- Both parties must visit together for the update or transfer process.
How the SIM Registration Update Process Works
- Visit your nearest Safaricom Shop or authorized agent.
- Present your original ID.
- The agent will:
- Scan your ID
- Take your photograph
- Capture your signature
- Submit the details into Safaricom’s secure system
- You will receive a confirmation SMS once your details are processed.
The in-store process typically takes less than 5 minutes, while system confirmation via SMS may take up to 4 weeks.
