Adobe Photoshop is one of the most powerful tools for photo editing and design, allowing users to transform ordinary pictures into professional-quality visuals. One of its most common and useful features is the ability to change background color. Whether you want to brighten a dull background, create a consistent studio look, or add a creative twist, here’s how to change background color in Adobe Photoshop step by step.

Open the Image in Photoshop

Launch Adobe Photoshop and open the image you want to edit by going to File > Open and selecting your file. Once the image loads, ensure the Layers panel is visible. If it’s not, enable it by clicking Window > Layers from the menu bar.

Unlock the Background Layer

When you import an image, Photoshop locks it by default. To edit, you need to unlock the background layer.
In the Layers panel, find the layer labeled Background and click the padlock icon next to it. Once unlocked, the layer’s name will automatically change to Layer 0, allowing you to modify it freely.

Select the Subject

Next, you’ll isolate your main subject so the color change only affects the background.
Choose the Quick Selection Tool from the toolbar or click Select > Subject in the top menu. Photoshop will automatically detect the subject in your photo.
You can refine your selection using Select and Mask or the Lasso Tool to perfect the edges.

Invert the Selection

Once the subject is selected, you need to switch the selection to the background.
Go to Select > Inverse from the menu bar. This reverses the selection so that the background—not the subject—is highlighted. You’ll know it’s correct if the dotted selection lines appear around the outside of your subject.

Choose a New Background Color

With the background selected, it’s time to apply your new color:

  1. Click the Foreground Color box at the bottom of the toolbar to open the Color Picker.
  2. Choose your desired shade and click OK.
  3. Go to Edit > Fill and select Foreground Color, or press Shift + F5 to fill the background automatically.
Your background will instantly change to the selected color.

Refine the Edges

After applying the new color, zoom in to inspect the edges. Use the Eraser Tool, Refine Edge Brush, or Layer Mask to clean up any uneven lines or leftover background fragments.
Smooth edges ensure your subject blends naturally with the new background, giving a professional finish.

Save Your Edited Image

Once satisfied with the result, save your project.
Go to File > Save As, select your desired format (JPEG, PNG, or PSD), and give your file a name.

  • JPEG/PNG: Best for sharing or uploading online.
  • PSD: Preserves all layers for future edits.

By following these steps, you can easily change background color in Adobe Photoshop and give your photos a fresh, polished appearance. Whether for portraits, products, or creative artwork, mastering this technique enhances both the visual quality and professionalism of your images.
