Google has unveiled a significant update for Google Photos, supercharging its popular photo-to-video feature with its most advanced AI video model yet, Veo 3. This move accelerates Google’s strategy of deeply integrating generative AI across its ecosystem, transforming a simple storage app into a dynamic creative studio.
Just one month after the feature’s initial launch, the shift from Veo 2 to Veo 3 promises a dramatic leap in quality. Users can now generate short, six-second clips that are notably sharper, smoother, and more lifelike, directly from their existing photo library.
A New Creative Hub: The “Create” Tab
The update introduces more than just a better AI model. Google Photos has been redesigned with a new “Create” tab, now permanently located at the bottom of the app alongside Photos, Collection, and Search. This new section serves as a centralized hub for all of Google Photos’ creative and generative AI tools.
How to Create an AI Video from a Photo:
- Open the Google Photos app and navigate to the new Create tab.
- Select the “Create a video” option and choose a photo from your library.
- You will be presented with two creative prompts:
- “Subtle movement”: For a realistic, cinematic effect with gentle motion.
- “I’m feeling lucky”: For a more imaginative, unpredictable, and fun animation.
- Veo 3 then generates a six-second video clip, which you can save to your library or share directly.
It’s important to note that free users will have a limited number of daily generations, while subscribers to the Google One AI Premium plan (Pro and Ultra tiers) enjoy significantly higher limits.
Beyond Video: A Suite of Creative Tools
The Create tab is a multifaceted toolkit. In addition to video generation, it consolidates other powerful features:
- Remix: Transform any photo into entirely new artistic styles, including anime, comic book, sketch, or 3D animation.
- Highlight Videos: Automatically generate curated short videos or “reels” from your recent photos and video clips.
- Collages & Animations: Quickly design stylized collages and animated graphics from groups of photos.
Free vs. Paid Tiers and a Note on Gemini
While the new Veo 3 videos in Google Photos are impressive, they are currently silent (without audio). For a more immersive experience, Gemini app subscribers on Pro and Ultra tiers can generate longer, eight-second clips that include AI-generated sound.
This update marks a pivotal evolution for Google Photos. It is no longer just a digital photo album; it is becoming an intelligent and accessible platform for creativity, allowing everyone to reimagine and bring their memories to life in new, dynamic ways.
