How to Get a Certificate for Continuing Legal Education in Uganda

A certificate for continuing legal education Uganda is issued by the Uganda Law Society (ULS) to legal practitioners as part of the mandatory Continuing Legal Education (CLE) program. This certificate ensures that all registered lawyers maintain professional competence, ethical standards, and up-to-date knowledge in the legal field.

The Uganda Law Society oversees the issuance of CLE certificates in coordination with the Uganda Law Council, in accordance with legal profession regulations. Every lawyer who intends to practice in Uganda must complete CLE requirements and obtain this certificate annually to maintain good standing with the Society.

Procedure

The application for a Certificate for Continuing Legal Education (CLE) is made in person through the Uganda Law Society (ULS).

  1. Visit the Uganda Law Society office and request the official CLE application form.
  2. Fill out the form with accurate details, including personal and professional information.
  3. Attach the required supporting documents.
  4. Proceed to pay the prescribed application fee of UGX 20,000 for both renewal and licensing.
  5. Submit the completed form along with the bank payment receipt to the ULS office.
  6. Once verified, the Certificate for Continuing Legal Education is issued within one day from the date of submission, provided all requirements are met.

Required Documents

Applicants must attach the following documents to their CLE application:

  • Introduction letter from the applicant’s law firm or chambers.
  • Proof of approval of chambers from the Uganda Law Council.
  • Copy of Law Development Centre (LDC) Diploma and Bachelor of Laws Degree certificates.
  • Proof of payment of CLE fees.

Eligibility

Any lawyer trained in Uganda or abroad who wishes to practice law in Uganda must be registered with the Uganda Law Society (ULS). Both new advocates and renewing members are required to participate in CLE programs and obtain a valid CLE certificate annually.

Fees

  • License Fee: UGX 20,000
  • Renewal Fee: UGX 20,000

Additional charges may apply for participation in special legal training sessions organized by ULS.

Validity

The Certificate for Continuing Legal Education is valid for one year from the date of issuance and must be renewed annually to retain membership and practicing rights.

Processing Time

Processing takes a maximum of one working day, provided all required documents are submitted correctly.

Instructions

All lawyers practicing in Uganda must hold a valid certificate for continuing legal education Uganda. The CLE program enhances professionalism, encourages lifelong learning, and ensures lawyers comply with ethical and statutory requirements.

Failure to renew this certificate may result in suspension of membership or disciplinary action by the Uganda Law Council.

  • Law firm or organization name
  • Registration number and year of practice
  • Qualification details (LDC diploma, degree)
  • Duration and accreditation details of CLE program attended
  • Source of funding or sponsorship for training

Purpose of the Certificate

The certificate for continuing legal education Uganda promotes professional growth among lawyers through structured training and workshops. It reinforces ethical conduct, ensures compliance with legal reforms, and maintains high standards of advocacy and client service in Uganda’s legal sector.

Information Which Might Help

The CLE program is partly supported by donors, including the Justice, Law and Order Sector (JLOS), which collaborates with ULS to improve training opportunities. However, funding delays can occasionally affect program scheduling. Lawyers are advised to register early to avoid disruptions in certification.
