In a bold move signaling a shift in strategy, Apple is preparing to replace its long-standing Siri voice assistant with a fully interactive AI chatbot later this year. The new system, codenamed Campos, marks a complete reversal of Apple’s previous stance that users prefer AI features integrated invisibly into their devices. Instead, Campos will enable users to have conversational exchanges with the AI, similar to the interactions users are accustomed to with ChatGPT or Google Gemini.

The new AI chatbot will be embedded within Apple’s upcoming iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 systems, which are slated for release in September, with a preview set to debut at Apple’s annual developer conference in June. This transformation will bring Apple’s voice assistant into direct competition with advanced AI-driven services.

What Makes Campos Different from Siri?

Unlike Siri, which has traditionally been designed for simple voice commands, Campos offers a deeper, more personalized experience. Users will be able to interact with the AI through voice or text, initiating full conversations that go beyond just simple queries. Campos will not only help users perform basic tasks like setting timers or making calls but also control your device in ways Siri currently cannot.

One of the key features that sets Campos apart is its deeper integration with Apple devices. It will have the ability to read what’s on your screen, launch apps, and even search through your personal data, including files, messages, calendar events, and songs. Additionally, Campos will perform standard chatbot functions like web searches, content generation, summarizing information, and analyzing files, providing a versatile tool for users.

Apple’s Strategic Move in the AI Race

Apple’s decision to adopt an AI chatbot represents a strategic pivot after years of avoiding chatbots in favor of integrating AI into discrete features. The company’s previous reluctance was based on the idea that users preferred AI to work behind the scenes, rather than directly engaging with it. However, the rise of ChatGPT and increasing competition from tech giants like OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft seem to have pushed Apple to rethink its approach.

The Campos chatbot will also benefit from a multiyear partnership with Google’s Gemini model, adding power and sophistication to its capabilities. The AI chatbot is part of Apple’s broader effort to catch up in the AI race, especially after the struggles of its Apple Intelligence system in 2024, which left users disappointed and frustrated.

How Campos Will Be Integrated Into Apple’s Ecosystem

Campos is designed to replace the existing Siri interface across all Apple devices. While Siri will continue to get minor updates in the near future, including new features in iOS 26.4 like screen analysis and deeper integration with personal data, Campos will be the major overhaul Apple needs to stay competitive in the growing AI field. Unlike other third-party chatbots, Campos won’t be released as a standalone app. Instead, it will fully integrate with the operating system, replacing the outdated voice assistant on iPhones, iPads, and Macs.

What to Expect From iOS 27 and Other Apple Updates

While Campos will undoubtedly be the standout feature in iOS 27, the upcoming operating system update will also focus on performance improvements and bug fixes. Apple is looking to refine the user experience after the extensive design overhaul in previous versions. Though there won’t be major changes to the operating system’s look and feel, the focus will be on making the AI chatbot and device performance as seamless and efficient as possible.

This shift represents Apple’s commitment to advancing AI technology and engaging users in a way that goes beyond simple voice commands. With its partnership with Google Gemini, Campos is poised to become a significant player in the AI space, offering a user-friendly and efficient alternative to existing chatbot technologies.
