In the United Arab Emirates, food safety is strictly regulated to protect public health and maintain high standards across the food industry. Anyone working with food—whether as a chef, server, bartender, or food business owner—must hold a valid Food Hygiene Certificate. Below is a detailed and easy-to-understand guide on how to apply for a food handler certificate, the documents required, eligibility criteria, and other important information to help you stay compliant.

Eligibility

  • All food handlers (chefs, cooks, servers, bartenders, and food packers) are eligible to apply.
  • Food business owners or managers are also required to obtain certification.
  • Applicants must be 18 years or older (or as per the department’s age requirement).

Application Procedure

Step 1: Check Local Regulations

  • Regulations may differ slightly between emirates. Contact your local Department of Health or Environmental Health Office for the latest updates.
  • Some regions may request additional requirements such as blood tests or X-rays to confirm medical fitness.

Step 2: Apply In-Person

  1. Visit your local Environmental Health Office or Department of Health to gather the most current application instructions.
  2. Use the provided contact link or phone numbers to confirm office hours and specific requirements.
  3. Enroll in a government-approved Food Safety and Hygiene Training Course. These courses are offered by recognized institutions and cover essential practices to ensure safe food handling.
  4. Successfully complete the course. Upon completion, you will receive a valid Food Hygiene Certificate.
  5. Submit any required medical documents, such as blood/stool/urine test results, X-rays, or screening forms. Some applicants may need to undergo a written test or health screening for communicable diseases or skin conditions.

Required Documents

  • Completed application form.
  • Valid identification (Emirates ID, passport, or driver’s license).
  • Copy of your passport.
  • Passport-size photographs (6 copies, taken within the last 3 months).
  • Food handler course completion certificate.
  • Medical fitness certificate from an approved practitioner.
  • Blood test report and X-ray (if required).
  • Police record or clearance (if requested).
  • Self-addressed envelope (with or without stamps, as specified).

Note: Additional documents may be requested by the authorities. Always carry original copies for verification.

Fees

  • Course fees vary depending on the institution and location.
  • Contact your local health office or approved training center for up-to-date fee information.

Validity

  • Certificates are valid until the date stated on the document.
  • Annual or semi-annual health screenings are required to maintain certification.

Processing Time

  • Course duration and certification period depend on the training institute.
  • Medical test results may take approximately 5 business days, depending on the laboratory and type of test.

Important Instructions

  • Always undergo regular health checks with a licensed medical practitioner (at least once every six months or as instructed).
  • Employers must not hire food handlers with illnesses that can contaminate food.
  • Certificates may be suspended or revoked if:
    • The handler is diagnosed with a communicable disease.
    • False information was provided during application.
    • The handler is found to pose a risk to food safety.
  • Display the Food Hygiene Certificate prominently at your workplace.
  • Fill all details on your application form carefully and without errors.
  • Incomplete or incorrect applications will be rejected.

Need for the Document

  • Legal Requirement: Mandatory under UAE food safety laws to work in or operate a food-related business.
  • Operational Compliance: Ensures your business avoids fines, legal action, or forced closure.
  • Public Confidence: Demonstrates your commitment to high hygiene standards, improving customer trust.

Additional Information

  • The Food Hygiene Certificate is also known as a Food Handler’s License, Food Handler’s Card, or Food Handler’s Permit.
  • Keep a copy of your certificate in a safe place and be prepared to present it during inspections.
