The Kenya School of Law (KSL) remains the only institution in Kenya that offers the Advocates Training Programme (ATP), a mandatory requirement for anyone wishing to join the Bar. Established under the Kenya School of Law Act No. 26 of 2012, KSL operates under the oversight of the government and provides advanced legal training. The main campus is located along Karen–Langata South Road in Nairobi, with a town campus situated at Development House, Moi Avenue.

This guide outlines the KSL fee structure for 2025, as well as the entry requirements for the Advocates Training Programme (ATP) and the Diploma in Law (Paralegal Studies).


1. Advocates Training Programme (ATP)

Study Duration:

  • 18 months in total:
    • 12 months of academic coursework
    • 6 months of pupillage

Entry Requirements

For LL.B Graduates Admitted After 8th December 2014

Graduates from Kenyan Universities must:

  • Have scored at least a B (plain) in English or Kiswahili and a mean grade of C+ (plus) in KCSE, or its equivalent.
  • Alternatively, have earned a minimum of 2 principal passes and 1 subsidiary pass, totaling at least 10 points in KACE or its equivalent.
  • Have successfully completed the 16 core subjects as outlined in the Second Schedule of the Legal Education Act, 2012.
  • Hold or be eligible for conferment of an LL.B degree from a recognized university in Kenya.

Graduates from Foreign Universities must:

  • Meet the same secondary education requirements as Kenyan graduates.
  • Hold a recognized LL.B degree from a foreign institution.
  • Obtain clearance from the Council of Legal Education (CLE).
  • Sit for and pass the Pre-Bar Examination as required under the Kenya School of Law Act.
For LL.B Graduates Admitted Before 8th December 2014

Applicants must:

  • Hold or be eligible for an LL.B degree from a recognized university.
  • Have met minimum university entry qualifications at the time of their undergraduate admission.
  • Have attained a minimum of grade B (plain) in English and a mean grade of C+ (plus) in KCSE or its equivalent.
  • Alternatively, for those with lower grades (e.g. C– in English), passing the Pre-Bar Examination is mandatory.

Note: Bar examination fees are charged separately and are handled by the Council of Legal Education (CLE).

2. Diploma in Law (Paralegal Studies)

The Paralegal Training Programme is a two-year diploma offered at KSL’s town campus located at Development House, 5th Floor, Moi Avenue, Nairobi. Paralegals support legal processes in law firms, corporate environments, and government institutions but are not qualified lawyers.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must meet any of the following:

  • KCSE mean grade of C (plain) and a C+ (plus) in English.
  • Division III in KCE/EACE with at least a credit in English.
  • One principal pass in KACE or its equivalent.
  • A credit/distinction in a Certificate in Law from KSL (2000–2003) or a related diploma/certificate recognized by CLE.

  • Weekday classes (day or evening options)
  • Duration: 2 academic years, 3 terms per year
  • Maximum 4 course units per term
  • Completion required within 2–3 academic years
