A Complete Guide to Applying for Nairobi Expressway ETC and MTC Cards

The Nairobi Expressway, stretching over 27.1 kilometers, has revolutionized urban travel in Kenya’s capital. Managed by MOJA Expressway, this modern toll road offers four different payment options: cash, Mpesa, the Manual Toll Collection (MTC) card, and the Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) card.

While cash and Mpesa provide basic functionality, the ETC and MTC cards offer convenience and efficiency, especially for regular users. This article explains how to apply for both the ETC and MTC cards, detailing the requirements, application process, and where to complete the setup.

Available Toll Payment Methods on the Nairobi Expressway

1. Cash Payment

Motorists can opt for the traditional method by paying cash at the toll booths. Upon entry, a ticket is issued, and the payment is made at the exit gate. Although simple, this option may cause delays during peak traffic hours.

2. Mobile Money (Mpesa)

Mpesa offers a quick and accessible way to pay for the toll. The mobile wallet can be used via supported partner platforms such as Stanbic Bank, NCBA, and Standard Chartered, as previously outlined.

3. Manual Toll Collection (MTC) Card

The MTC card allows users to pre-load funds and use the card at entry and exit points by tapping. It removes the need for cash, providing a more efficient transaction process.

4. Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) Card

ETC is the fastest and most seamless payment method. It requires the installation of an On-Board Unit (OBU) in your vehicle. The system uses automatic vehicle recognition, allowing toll gates to open without stopping, enabling uninterrupted travel.

Requirements for ETC and MTC Card Registration

For Individuals:

  • Original and copy of National ID or Passport
  • Vehicle logbook

For Companies:

  • Company authorization letter
  • Certificate of Incorporation
