Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for deeper cooperation between China and Britain to advance multilateralism and free trade. Speaking during a meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in Beijing on Thursday, Xi emphasized the importance of both countries promoting “true multilateralism.” He stated that international law could only be effective if all nations adhere to it, urging major countries, particularly, to take the lead in this regard to prevent a regression into chaos or a “law of the jungle” scenario.
Commitment to Peaceful Development
Xi also reaffirmed China’s commitment to peaceful development, stressing that the country would never pose a threat to others, regardless of its growth. He highlighted that China has never initiated a war or occupied foreign land, emphasizing the nation’s peaceful foreign policy approach. This message was underscored by a desire for mutual respect and cooperation, aligning with his broader vision for global stability.
Expanding Cooperation Across Key Sectors
In terms of bilateral relations, Xi called for a broadening of China-Britain cooperation, focusing on sectors such as education, healthcare, finance, and services. He further emphasized the importance of mutual benefit and win-win results in economic and trade exchanges between the two nations.
Xi also proposed expanding joint research and collaboration in high-tech fields, including artificial intelligence, bioscience, new energy, and low-carbon technologies. By fostering innovation and industrial transformation in these areas, he believes China and Britain can contribute to global development and prosperity, ensuring a more sustainable and cooperative future.
