Meta to Trial Premium Subscriptions for Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp

Meta is set to trial premium subscriptions for Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp users in the coming months. This experiment marks the company’s latest move to introduce paid services, offering advanced features like expanded artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities. While the premium options will be available for a fee, core services will remain free.

Subscription Plan to Include AI Capabilities

The subscription will unlock exclusive features, including Manus, an AI tool acquired by Meta for $2 billion in December. Manus will allow users to complete tasks such as trip planning and presentation creation with minimal effort.

In addition, Meta has introduced Vibes, a new video generation app. Vibes uses AI to help users bring their ideas to life with creative visual tools. Subscribers will gain access to these advanced features, providing a unique and dynamic content creation experience.

Core Services Remain Free

Despite the introduction of premium subscriptions, Meta assures that Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp’s core features will remain free for all users. The company’s goal is to offer added value through premium features, without limiting access to the basic services that have made the platforms so popular.

This trial follows Meta’s earlier paid offerings, such as its monthly verification service for Facebook and Instagram users. The introduction of premium subscriptions is part of Meta’s ongoing effort to diversify its business model beyond advertising revenue.

AI Innovation and Strategic Acquisitions

Meta’s acquisition of Manus is a key part of its strategy to enhance its AI offerings. Manus, based in Singapore, specializes in autonomous AI agents that can complete tasks independently. Unlike other chatbots, Manus can plan, execute, and finish tasks based on instructions, improving efficiency and user experience.

However, Beijing has launched an investigation into the deal to determine if it violated China’s technology export laws or national security regulations. The outcome could impact Meta’s future operations in Asia.

Paid Verification and User Testing

Meta has also tested several paid services, including a monthly fee for a blue verification tick on Instagram and Facebook. These services provide Meta with new revenue streams while ensuring a more reliable verification process for users.

Additionally, in 2023, Meta conducted a test limiting the number of links some users could share on Facebook posts. Users in the UK and US were notified that, without a subscription, they could only share a limited number of links. Meta described the test as an effort to assess whether more links would add value for subscribers.
