Lonzo Anderson Ball, born on October 27, 1997, in Anaheim, California, is an American professional basketball player known for his unique playmaking ability, leadership on fast breaks, and unselfish play style. Ball has established himself as one of the NBA’s most creative guards, earning recognition for his elite passing and defensive instincts throughout his career.

Early Life and Family Legacy

Lonzo is the eldest of three sons born to LaVar and Tina Ball, both former college athletes who instilled a competitive drive in their children from a young age. Raised in a basketball-centric family, Lonzo began playing the sport at the age of two and quickly became a fan of LeBron James.

His younger brother, LiAngelo, followed a similar basketball path but faced setbacks due to eligibility issues after a shoplifting incident during a preseason tour in China. Despite his challenges, LiAngelo played professionally overseas and in the G League, with Lonzo offering candid advice about focusing on international leagues where he could thrive financially and competitively.

The youngest Ball sibling, LaMelo, born in 2001, has emerged as the most electrifying of the trio. LaMelo was named NBA Rookie of the Year in 2021 and earned an All-Star selection the following season with the Charlotte Hornets. Known for his flashy style, LaMelo has drawn comparisons to his brothers but with a more scoring-oriented flair.

Together, the Ball brothers led Chino Hills High School to an undefeated 35-0 season in 2016, winning the national championship and boosting their family’s visibility on the national stage.

College and NBA Career

Ball’s rise to prominence began at UCLA, where he had a stellar freshman season, averaging 14.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 7.6 assists per game. He earned unanimous first-team All-American honors and led UCLA to the Sweet 16. His exceptional passing and court vision led to him breaking Pac-12 freshman records for assists, and he was a finalist for the Wooden Award and Naismith College Player of the Year.

In the 2017 NBA Draft, Lonzo was selected second overall by the Los Angeles Lakers, marking the start of his highly anticipated professional career. During his rookie season, Ball showcased his elite playmaking skills, averaging 7.2 assists per game, though injuries plagued his time on the court. Despite these setbacks, his standout performance came in just his second game when he posted a near triple-double with 29 points, 11 rebounds, and 9 assists against the Phoenix Suns.

Lakers to Pelicans: A New Chapter

Ball’s time with the Lakers was filled with promise, but it was also marred by shooting inconsistencies and family controversies. In 2019, he was traded to the New Orleans Pelicans as part of the deal that brought Anthony Davis to Los Angeles. In New Orleans, Ball flourished, forming a dynamic trio alongside Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram. He reached career highs with a 33-point game against the Minnesota Timberwolves and 17 assists against the Portland Trail Blazers in 2021.

His time with the Pelicans solidified his reputation as a transition maestro and lockdown perimeter defender. However, despite his growth, injuries continued to hinder his career.

Chicago Bulls and Injury Setbacks

In 2021, Ball signed a four-year, $85 million deal with the Chicago Bulls via sign-and-trade. However, his promising tenure with the Bulls was derailed by persistent left knee issues, including a meniscus tear, forcing him to miss both the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons. Despite multiple surgeries, including a cartilage transplant, Ball made a modest return in October 2024, contributing averages of 4.1 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 3.1 assists in 35 games before being sidelined again with a sprained wrist.

Trade to Cleveland Cavaliers

In a surprising offseason move after the 2024-25 season, Ball was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers in exchange for Isaac Okoro. Under new head coach Kenny Atkinson, Ball is poised for a fresh start, with the Cavaliers praising his workout form and potential to serve as a starting point guard, especially with Darius Garland’s toe injury.

Accolades and Legacy

Lonzo’s basketball career has been marked by numerous accolades, including being named Naismith Prep Player of the Year and Morgan Wootten Player of the Year in 2016 during his high school years at Chino Hills. His collegiate achievements, such as winning Wayman Tisdale Freshman of the Year and earning multiple first-team All-American selections, cemented his status as one of the most promising young talents in basketball.

Ball’s rookie season in the NBA earned him a spot on the 2017-18 All-Rookie Second Team and saw him achieve multiple triple-doubles, joining the ranks of Magic Johnson and Oscar Robertson as one of the few players to average at least six rebounds and six assists per game at age 20 or younger.

His achievements, combined with his unique statistical milestones, have solidified his place as a visionary guard with a lasting impact from high school dominance to professional promise.
