A few years ago, the idea of electric motorcycles (EVs) dominating Nairobi or Mombasa’s streets was almost unthinkable. The motorcycle industry in Kenya was firmly rooted in petrol-powered bikes, with riders allocating a significant portion of their daily earnings to fuel and maintenance costs. However, the scene has drastically shifted in 2026, as Kenya embarks on a major transition to electric mobility, with electric motorcycles leading the way.

The country’s electric mobility landscape has been rapidly evolving, particularly within the boda boda (motorcycle taxi) and last-mile delivery sectors. Once a niche, electric motorcycles are now transforming the way goods and people move in Kenyan towns and cities, spurred by the need for more sustainable, affordable transportation options. By the end of 2025, the number of registered electric motorcycles in Kenya had skyrocketed to over 30,000—up from fewer than 1,000 just three years earlier.

The Economic and Environmental Benefits of Electric Motorcycles

The adoption of electric two-wheelers has brought significant economic benefits to riders and businesses. For boda boda operators, electric motorcycles can cut operating costs by up to 60% compared to petrol bikes. These savings come from lower fuel costs and reduced maintenance needs, which directly improve riders’ disposable income and quality of life. Additionally, the electric shift is creating employment opportunities across various sectors, from manufacturing and assembly to maintenance, helping to boost the local economy.

Beyond personal savings, electric motorcycles contribute to Kenya’s broader energy infrastructure. With 90% of the country’s electricity coming from renewable sources, the rise in EV charging demand will help utilize excess power generated during off-peak hours. This aligns with Kenya’s long-term goal of reducing its reliance on imported fossil fuels, positioning the country closer to energy independence.

The transition to electric motorcycles also offers strong environmental, social, and governance (ESG) benefits. The reduction in carbon emissions is a major advantage, with the environmental impact becoming more significant as more riders make the switch. Socially, the move toward e-mobility has opened doors for women and marginalized groups to enter the historically male-dominated boda boda sector, promoting greater economic independence and gender equity.

Spiro: A Key Player in Kenya’s E-Mobility Sector

One of the major players in Kenya’s growing electric motorcycle market is Spiro, a company that has quickly become a key part of the country’s e-mobility ecosystem. Spiro entered the electric motorcycle market in 2023, launching in Mombasa before expanding to Nairobi. By 2025, the company had already deployed more than 16,000 electric motorcycles, with over 400 battery swap stations spread across the country. In early 2026, Spiro committed to scaling up operations with plans to expand to 100,000 bikes and 1,000 swap stations.

Spiro’s business model revolves around battery swapping, allowing riders to exchange depleted batteries for fully charged ones in less than five minutes. This system is facilitated through a mobile app, ensuring that users can quickly access stations even during off-peak hours. Spiro has partnered with existing petrol stations, such as Petrocity, to leverage sites with grid connections and steady customer traffic. This approach reduces the need for building new infrastructure, making the transition to electric motorcycles more cost-effective and scalable.

Addressing Local Challenges and Priorities for E-Mobility

While Spiro and other companies are making significant strides in promoting electric motorcycles, there are still key challenges to address for the successful implementation of Kenya’s National Electric Mobility Policy. According to Spiro, infrastructure challenges, such as low grid reliability, high electricity costs, and limited network reach, need to be tackled through better coordination between Kenya Power (KPLC), the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA), and the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO). These measures are essential to protect battery health and ensure uninterrupted service at swapping stations, particularly in rural and peri-urban areas.

Another important priority is the need for clear, phased local content requirements for manufacturing and assembly. By encouraging domestic production, Kenya can foster the growth of its local electric vehicle industry and create more jobs. Additionally, financial accessibility is a critical barrier. Offering credit guarantees, insurance options, and lower-risk lending for riders and fleet operators would help make electric motorcycles more affordable for a broader segment of the population.

Public education is also key to successful policy implementation. Misinformation about electric vehicle safety, maintenance, and overall economics can hinder adoption. Therefore, public campaigns must emphasize the long-term benefits of electric motorcycles, not just for individual riders but for the environment and economy as a whole.

The Road Ahead for Electric Motorcycles in Kenya

Kenya’s transition to electric motorcycles is already well underway, with companies like Spiro leading the charge in making e-mobility a reality. As the government continues to implement the National Electric Mobility Policy, further support for infrastructure, local manufacturing, financing, and public education will be crucial to achieving widespread adoption. By addressing these challenges and expanding e-mobility solutions, Kenya is taking an important step toward a more sustainable, inclusive, and economically empowered future.

As more riders switch to electric motorcycles, Kenya will not only improve the livelihoods of its citizens but also contribute to a cleaner, greener environment. With ongoing developments and a supportive policy framework, the future of electric mobility in Kenya looks bright.
